CEO News - NGIWA Continues To Grow
Happy New Year and season greetings for a prosperous 2017 from us all at NGIWA.

I hope you have all had a good break or at least had some time off over the recent Christmas festive period. No doubt you have all come back to work with a few headaches of staff still on leave as well as the scorching January summer temperatures to deal with.

So what are your new year’s resolutions?

Waterwise Garden Centre Workshops Kick Off For 2017

NGIWA launched its new series of Waterwise workshops last week out at Zanthorrea Nursery. The 50+ guests learned that being waterwise is much more than just turning the tap on less often, but about understanding our plants and how they grow under under WA's harsh conditions. Thank you to everyone who turned up to make it a great morning for all.  Huge thanks to Water Corp for sponsoring these events.

Member Profile - Men Of The Trees (Hazelmere)

The St Barbe Grove Nursery, located in Hazelmere, is the headquarters of Men of The Trees in Western Australia. The nursery was established in 1987 to support the mission of bringing people together to plant and grow trees, and in doing so achieve healthy, productive and sustainable landscapes. MOTT is NIASA accredited and EcoHort certified through the FMS program.

It grows in excess of 200,000 seedlings each year of which most are planted by local councils, friends of groups and small landholders, but seedlings are also available to the general public. A detailed plant catalogue, that is available from their website, highlights a wide variety of species of plants that are available seasonally. There is an extensive list of Eucalyptus and during my walk through the nursery, my eye caught three species of Lechenaultia, ‘biloba’, ‘florabunda’ and the yellow form ‘linarioides’.

Waterwise Garden Centre Workshops 2017
The Waterwise Garden Centre Workshops for 2017  have kindly been sponsored by the Water Corporation. This initiative by NGIWA was seen as a great opportunity to strengthen its links with the Water Corporation and in doing so, provide benefits back to members who support and endorse the Waterwise Garden Centre program by bringing members of the public into their businesses.

A number of members have kindly offered to participate in the series, and workshops will be held throughout 2017 across member garden centres and nurseries in metro Perth as well as regional areas including  Bunbury, Margaret River, Denmark, Busselton and Albany.

Presentations will be carried out by Matthew Lunn as well as notable members of the Horticultural Media Association (WA) and audiences will have the perfect opportunity to learn about sustainable gardening practices with particular emphasis on watering practices, soil management and plant selection for various WA gardening zones.

If you would like to be involved in the Waterwise Garden Centre Workshops please contact us at reception@ngiwa.com.au or phone 0419 930008.

Small Business Workshop - 12 Step Business Plan
Tuesday 21st March 2017  10am to 1pm
FFTI Boardroom, East Vic Park

If you want to grow your business, need to secure finance, or simply want to develop your business idea, then this 12 Step Business Plan workshop is for you. Designed to ‘ease’ you into business planning, this three-hour workshop helps clarify why a business plan can be such an important tool for any small business operator. Business plans provide a framework for your business and can help you identify the resources you’ll need for the future.

At the end of this workshop you will understand:

– what goes into a business plan and why

– the importance of developing a marketing plan

– why a financial strategy is useful

– how a SWOT analysis can help you identify your business hotspots

– why reviewing performance is so important

This is a FREE event for NGIWA members and only $15pp for non-members (this workshop normally costs $50pp to attend).  You will not be expected to develop a business plan at this workshop however the content covered will definitely help put you ahead of your competitors.

Lunch will be provided.  Please RSVP by FRIDAY 17th March 2017 by clicking here

Thank you to the Small Business Development Corporation for kindly offering this workshop to our members.

Thank You To Leon Spratt
Thank you to Leon Spratt who has decided to resign from the NGIWA Board to pursue his career in the horticulture industry.

Leon joined the Board following the 2015 AGM and bought with him great enthusiasm for the industry as a whole and a passionate focus on the next generation of budding horticulturists.

Last year he was awarded the "Heather Rumsey Young Leader Award" for demonstrating exceptional leadership, initiative and passion for the industry.

We all wish him the best of luck.
Garden Releaf Day - March 19

Independent garden centres across Australia will once again be supporting the Garden Releaf program in 2017 with Garden Releaf Day set for Sunday March 19. Focusing on the benefits of plants and gardens to enrich our lives, garden centres will be exploding with colour, plenty of fun activities and informative events across the day (and for some the weekend also). The aim is to encourage people to get into their garden and get planting – or take someone to a garden to just enjoy.

Gardens and colour continue to prove to be beneficial for positive mental health and wellbeing so Garden Releaf Day will be themed around Colour for Health. The Garden centres will be bursting with colour and beautiful plants and this will once again support beyond blue through related fund raising activities in the lead up to and on the day.

Are You Bushfire Ready This Summer?
The Yarloop fire anniversary earlier this month is a timely reminder that we are all at risk of losing property (and lives) during these bushfire prone months. As business owners it is your responsibility to understand your local risks, prepare your business and your employees, identify your triggers to act, understand how to inform customers and undertake proper emergency planning.  [Read more...]
