LMSA FPAC: Survey on Discrimination Against LHS+ Students/Alumni During Medical School/Residency Applications

Dear Current Medical Student or Medical School Graduate of the LHS+ (Latina/o/x/e, Hispanic or of Spanish Origin+) Communities,

LMSA FPAC (Latino Medical Student Association Faculty/Physician Advisory Council) is conducting a confidential and voluntary needs assessment to better serve our membership and inform educational initiatives and future policies. This survey will assess the frequency and burden of discrimination faced by LHS+ community members during medical school and the residency application process.

This assessment is in follow-up to the recent AAMC reminder to the academic community that the medical schools in Puerto Rico are LCME accredited and to Gabriel Colón and Paola Caldas' (medical students from Universidad Central del Caribe School of Medicine Bayamón, PR) submission of resolution 091 (I-20) to the AMA-MSS Reference Committee entitled "Educate Residency, Fellowship and Academic Programs on the United States-Puerto Rico Relationship Status."

The questions ask about your experiences during medical school. Some questions regarding your experiences may make you uncomfortable. We hope that this assessment will add to the knowledge of the presence of discrimination during medical school and ultimately contribute to a climate of diversity and inclusion. All of your responses will be confidential and voluntary.

Your responses will be submitted online. The responses will be stored on an encrypted server.

Only J.P. Sanchez MD, MPH, Executive Director, LMSA National and Deion Ellis MD, MMS, Director, National Center for LMSA Leadership and Advancement will have access to the information you provide. Aggregated data will be shared with LMSA members and academic health centers to raise awareness of discrimination faced by LHS+ communities, but this data will remain anonymous.

You are free to decline to participate, to end participation at any time for any reason, or to refuse to answer any individual question without penalty, keeping in mind that a complete assessment is more helpful than an incomplete assessment.

Your decision whether or not to participate in this project will not affect your relationship with LMSA or LMSA FPAC.

Remember, you can report episodes of discrimination, at any time, to the AAMC ERAS Investigations via erasinvestigations@aamc.org, your medical school leadership (e.g. Dean of Students Affairs, Dean for GME/DIO, Dean of Diversity), or to your University Office for Equal Opportunity. Residents or fellows can make formal complaints about their treatment in their program via complaints@acgme.org. In addition, if the survey makes you feel emotionally overwhelmed or distressed feel free to contact any of your medical school leadership, well-being services, Deion Ellis MD, MMS, at dlellis@salud.unm.edu, J.P. Sanchez MD, MPH, at exec.director@lmsa.net, or LMSA National President Gualberto Muñoz at president@lmsa.net.

HIGHLIGHTS:

“A project we have continued to be involved with is working closely with the schools' admission committee. Both co-presidents were part of the admission committee this year where we interviewed applicants, evaluated applications, presented candidates to the committee, and served as voting members. We are pleased to have admitted more Latin-identifying students than in the previous 5 years and overall have admitted more underrepresented students as well.

In the past month, we have assisted in choosing the future student admission committee members through evaluating applications and interviews. We are excited to have another member of our LMSA community be part of the admission committee for the upcoming cycle.

Additionally, one of our members has created a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) scenario for the admission interviews that caters toward the diversity competency that we strive to achieve. We have worked with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (DIO) to process the new MMI prompt and it has been well-received by DIO and admission committee faculty. This prompt is a tangible way to both allow students who have diversity constantly at the forefront of their thinking to shine during interviews as well as filter those applicants who do not. This is in hopes of creating an environment where diversity and cultural differences are respected and not a second-hand priority for incoming students.

Another project one of our members has been a part of is creating and leading a mentorship program that was started by SNMA and has expanded to multiple groups along the UMass community including LMSA. This program was created to foster relationships with students and physicians with similar backgrounds and interests. This month, the group is planning to host training sessions for mentors to equip them with materials and ideas that will help them help mentees.

Lastly, medical students from Howard have joined a UMass summer program where they get to live in our city and shadow specialties while they are here. We along with SNMA and the POC affinity group have helped them get accustomed to living in Worcester and planned activities in the area for their time here.”
