Exciting News from Citizen Schools New York!

Dear Friend,

It’s a time of celebration for us here at Citizen Schools. We get to celebrate the hard work of our students, Citizen Teachers and Teaching Fellows in a series of WOW! Showcase events throughout December.  Ten weeks of apprenticeship experiences that range from video game design to stop motion animation and business planning will be on display at our schools and with corporate partners. We’d love for you to see our students in action and you can sign up to attend an upcoming WOW! here

And, last night, we got to celebrate the incredible community of investors and supporters whose contributions allow us to offer high quality extended learning time programs to nearly 700 middle school students in New York City. I was humbled and inspired by the stories shared by our student speakers, including Demere - an 8th grader at the Urban Assembly Academy for Future Leaders in West Harlem. You can hear what Citizen Schools means to Demere in the video below - and read a full event re-cap at the end of this newsletter.

It’s been an incredible fall semester. Thank you again for helping to put our students on a path to success in middle school, high school, and beyond.

Enjoy a wonderful and safe holiday season.

With gratitude,

Wendy Lee
Executive Director, Citizen Schools New York

CITIZEN TEACHER OF THE MONTH: Donna Fontana

Volunteer Citizen Teachers like Donna Fontana provide hands-on enrichment opportunities that awaken our students’ minds to what might be possible for their future.  As a Citizen Teacher volunteer for five years, now in her 11th apprenticeship, Donna’s impact in East Harlem is remarkable.

CITIZEN SCHOOLS GALA RE-CAP

Corporate and community leaders gathered at the Waldorf Astoria  in New York on Wednesday night to support Citizen Schools students. Public Advocate for the City of New York Letitia James – the City’s second highest ranking elected official – was the guest speaker.  Google was the event’s presenting sponsor. Citizen Schools New York Board President Torrence Boone, who is Vice President of Google’s Global Agency Sales and Services, was the program’s facilitator. 8th grader Devin Taylor also shared with the crowd what Citizen Schools has meant to him. The funds raised will support Citizen Schools’ Expanded Learning Time Program in New York. Check out this video that was also featured during the dinner!
