FALL - WINTER 2018
Dear Friends of Robert Wilson,

After an eventful International Summer Program at the Watermill Center, Bob is now rehearsing in the beautiful Italian city of Parma. The Watermill workshops this year included, among others: The Map or The Impossible Black Tulip, a creation for the Shanghai Festival (2019), The Messiah for the Mozartwoche Salzburg (2020), Shakespeare's Tempest for the National Theater Sofia (2020), and Beckett/Feldman's Neither for the Teatro Argentino de la Plata (2020)—an array of exciting projects to look forward to in the next years. In this newsletter, you will find the highlights of the coming months. Don't forget to check out our Calendar regularly for event updates.
JUST OPENED: "BALTHUS UNFINISHED" IN LAUSANNE

Commissioned by the Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts Lausanne and the Balthus Foundation, this unique and very brief exhibition takes place on "Platform 10," in the vaults of the new Fine Arts Museum's construction site. An installation of unfinished masterpieces in a yet unfinished museum, this memorable experience designed by Bob will only be on display for a few precious days.

LE TROUVÈRE: THE RARE FRENCH TROUBADOUR

Giuseppe Verdi's Troubadour is one of the most popular operas ever. However, not many people know the French version—Le Trouvère—that Verdi prepared for Parisian audiences in the tradition of the "Grand Opéra." Although it was a big success in 1856/57, the French version, which includes a large ballet in Act III and a French libretto, is nowadays seldom performed. This month, Bob will direct Le Trouvère at the beautiful historic Teatro Farnese in Parma, under the baton of Maestro Roberto Abbado. Bob is collaborating with American photographer Robert Rosenkranz, whose otherworldly photographs of the sea will create a counterpoint to the opera's often violent action. Next year, the production will be presented at the opera in Bologna in its original and better-known Italian version.
Le Trouvère, from September 29 - October 20, 2018 at the Verdi Festival Parma / Teatro Farnese
Il trovatore, opening on January 22, 2019 at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna
PRINCIPESSA DI MORTE: TURANDOT

After Madama Butterfly (Paris 1993), which has remained in the Paris Opera's repertoire until today, Turandot is the second opera by Giacomo Puccini to be directed by Bob. In this co-production between Madrid, Vilnius and Toronto, audiences will not see the chinoiseries that are common in many productions of this opera; just as there were no cherry blossom's and paper walls in Bob's Butterfly. Bob warned the performers already back in 2015, during the first Turandot staging workshop: "Be careful. The music can be very emotional, so you must be cold!"
From November 30 - December 30, 2018 at the Teatro Real, Madrid
From March 1 - April 6, 2019 at the Lithuanian National Opera, Vilnius
From September 28 - November 2, 2019 at the Canadian Opera Company, Toronto
