Update from the Library
The 2017 Forest of Reading® has started at Wilkinson! This annual reading program is organized and promoted by the Ontario Library Association and is designed to increase interest in reading for pleasure, to develop a love of reading and to celebrate the work of Canadian authors. Every year, thousands of students from across the province participate in the program by reading 5 (or more) books from a selection of ten titles. And every year, hundreds of Wilkinson students participate in the Forest of Reading and read amazing, new, Canadian books.
Grade K-3 students are enjoying the Blue Spruce picture books during their library visits and will get a chance to vote on their favourite at the end of April.
Students in grades 4-6 can join the Silver Birch reading club starting on Monday. Permission forms will be going home this week with students who are interested in joining. Forms are due back by Monday, January 23rd but students are welcome to join up until the end of the month. Participating students are asked to make a commitment to read at least five books in any one category (Fiction, Non-Fiction or Express) between now and the end of April. Of course, reading more than 5 books and reading in all 3 programs is encouraged!
As students finish a book, they will be checking in with a 'Teacher Sponsor' who has read the book to get their signature. Students get to vote for their favourite book at the end of April. In mid-May, some of the members will join Mr. Krentz on a trip to Harbourfront for the Festival of Trees, a celebration of reading and of the books in the program. To read more about this year's selection of nominated titles, check out the Ontario Library Association's Forest of Reading site. All titles are also available from the Toronto Public Library.
