3 IMPORTANT COVID UPDATES:
1. If your family chooses to travel or gather in large groups for Thanksgiving, SUSD is asking you to voluntarily quarantine your SUSD student for 14 days upon return.
From SUSD 11-13-2020 briefing: "To help keep our students, teachers and school personnel healthy - and schools open for on-campus learning and activity - we are asking each family that travels or attends a large gathering for the Thanksgiving holiday to voluntarily quarantine its Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) students at home for the two weeks following the last date of travel. We realize this presents a temporary inconvenience. However, with everyone's cooperation and with everyone monitoring their households for signs of illness, such as cold, flu and COVID-19, together, we can all contribute to a healthy and safe community. If you do observe any signs of illness in your household, we ask that you please keep your student off campus. "
2. SUSD has partnered with Embry Women's Health to offer free Covid antigen testing at the Oak Learning Campus.
Drive-thru tests are available 5 days a week, 7am-7pm at 7501 E. Oak St. Results available within 36-72hrs following test.
3. From Dr. Menzel:
"As expected, the most recent numbers for SUSD reflect an increase in the number of cases per 100,000. To view this week's metrics, visit www.susd.org/COVID19 and click "Metrics" on the left menu. This benchmark indicator has been in the red for three weeks now and in a few zip codes has jumped significantly. The percent positivity remains in the yellow category at 7.7% (the rate for Maricopa County for this reporting period was 8.9%).
"The requirement when one or two benchmarks are in the red for two weeks is for schools to consult with the Maricopa County Department of Public Health regarding a potential return to online learning with onsite support. I continue to be in regular communication with county health department officials to understand their understanding of the data in light of case counts in our buildings and any evidence of spread on our campuses. At the present time, they are still not recommending we return to online education but there are concerns with respect to the rising number of cases coupled with the Thanksgiving holiday.
Our percent of students who qualify for free and reduced has declined to a point that we could lose our Title I status.
These funds help pay for one of our counselors, our Instructional Specialist, our intervention teachers, supplies and professional development for teachers, and parent involvement activities.
Please take the time to submit your application for free or reduced lunch as soon as possible.
If you qualify, your family not only receives support with breakfast and lunch, but also reduced fees for athletics and other extra-curricular needs.
Please use a computer -- not a phone -- to complete the application. (The website doesn't work smoothly on a phone...)
If you need help completing the application, please contact Leticia Pereda, our Community Specialist at lpereda@susd.org, or your child’s guidance counselor. Your help is greatly appreciated!
A FEW ITEMS OF NOTE:
Please help us by ensuring that your child brings his/her fully charged Chromebook each day.
Teachers have been trying to support students with charging, but it has caused many challenges and we are tightening up our procedures.
If a student’s device is dead when they arrive at school, they will need to complete the assignment on paper and transfer to Google Classroom.
Our number one priority is keeping students and staff safe and making sure students do not move seats or locations in a classroom will help with this goal.
Students will have the opportunity for picture retakes on Tuesday, December 8.
We invite our EDL students to come on this day.
We will create an alpha split schedule, so their picture can be in the yearbook. Please watch for the schedule!
Our yearbook order forms went home this week.
If interested, please consider getting your order in early.
We over ordered last year and will be cutting way back. This means we will not have extras for last minute purchases.
Students are required to wear their ID on a lanyard where it is visible at all times (Replacements are $5.00 each)
Students need to come to school prepared with all necessary items as no deliveries of any items are allowed
Students must adhere to the dress code
Students will be participating in ELA and Math Benchmarks between Nov. 30-Dec. 18. Teachers will communicate their selected dates.
A FEW (MORE) ITEMS OF NOTE:
In-person learning is currently planned for 5 days/week, with a return to a full-day schedule. Every Wednesday will be an Early Release Day to allow for professional development, and to give teachers time to assist students who may be in quarantine.
