Port Visits Aim to Keep Business Climate Healthy

Port of The Dalles representatives are scheduling meetings this fall and winter with the traded sector businesses that make up the core of the Port Industrial Area and serve as the foundation of the local economy. By producing and shipping goods outside of the county, these businesses bring income into the county that is used to pay workers and support out accustomed level of local services. In other words, they are vital to the local economy.

Industrial Land Inventory

The Port of The Dalles is peeking into the nooks and crannies of the local industrial land base to identify property available for sale or lease in the Industrial (I) or Commercial Light Industrial (CLI) zones of The Dalles. "As the regional economy has blossomed, the number of businesses contact the Port seeking land has really grown," said Andrea Klaas, Port Executive Director.

Dufur Receives State
Support for Traffic and Tourism

Dufur is looking at new ways to address traffic issues on the main street adjacent to Dufur School, and developing a new community brand aimed at attracting visitors.
Dufur's busiest street passes in front of the school, adding to the usual pick-up and drop-off congestion. A committee is looking at ways to calm the traffic.
Meanwhile, the Dufur Chamber of Commerce has won a $10,000 Oregon Tourism grant to help develop identity marketing materials designed to boost tourism.

Forest Industry Faces
Challenges, Opportunities

Employment opportunities and consumer preference for wood are two opportunities in the forest products industry today, while companies in the industry are challenged to find skilled workers and reliable sources of raw materials. That was the message at the Mid-Columbia Economic Development District Symposium November 2 in Stevenson.
