LETTER FROM THE CHAIR                              


Greetings from New York City. 

It is hard to believe that another academic year just ended. As you all know, the month of May also means graduation. We are very proud to see our students complete their degrees and leave Fordham ready to pursue their dreams in the United States, China, India, Brazil, Belgium, or wherever they may go. Congratulations to The Class of 2018!

Our marketing faculty has spent their spring term working on various research projects. Under the Research section, you can read summaries of some of the selected publications of my colleagues. As a further confirmation of our area and school’s emphasis on data and analytics-based curriculum, one of our faculty has developed and delivered a new marketing analytics course for the undergraduate integrated program. You can read about it under the Teaching section.

This academic year, our marketing area collaborated with another area at the business school to launch an  interdisciplinary social innovation research initiative. You can learn about the details of the research day that we organized under the Hot Topics section.

We are very proud of the new Travel Scholarship Program that the Gabelli School of Business launched as a collaboration with the AMA SERVSIG. Check the Hot Topics section to learn more about this scholarship and the incoming Frontiers Conference hosted by Texas State University in Austin, TX. Our area will be represented by several faculty at that premier global service conference, and we hope to see many of you there for a great Texas-sized conference experience as organized by our colleagues at Texas State.

In her forthcoming solo-authored article in the Journal of Consumer Affairs, Genevieve O'Connor examines the relationships between consumers’ cognitive style and subjective knowledge and objective knowledge and how these relationships vary by demographics. More

In their ethnographic work published in the Journal of Consumer Culture, Timothy Malefyt and his co-authors examine women’s makeup practices and cultural tension between inner and outer constructs of beauty in the United StatesMore

Alexander Buoye has designed a new Marketing Analytics course as part of the Gabelli undergraduate Integrated Project (IP) program. More 

With the assistance of Timothy Malefyt, the marketing area continued the Industry Speaker Series that provided our students with exposure to different marketing practices in various industries. The most recent speakers were Mackenzie Murphy from Mattel Brands and Edwin Philogene, formerly of BBDO and Tumblr. More

The 7th Annual Richard Colombo Marketing Analytics Competition was organized by Mohammad Nejad with assistance from Hooman Estelami in March 2018. More than 20 graduate and undergraduate students competed at this two-round competition using their knowledge and skill set that they acquired in different marketing analytics and data related courses. More
The Gabelli School of Business, in collaboration with AMA SERVSIG, launched a travel scholarship program to support a PhD student or a junior faculty from a developing country from Asia, Africa, or South America to attend the Frontiers Conference.

As part of our Distinguished Speaker Series, Dr. Wendy Moe, from Maryland State University, and Dr. Laurel Anderson, from Arizona State University, visited the Gabelli School of Business's marketing area to share their research. Colleagues from other Gabelli academic areas, PhD students, and guests from neighboring schools attended these talks. 

The Marketing Edge Collegiate Summit is a program that exposes students to new ideas and prepares them for future careers in marketing.

This collaborative event will be held again at the Gabelli School of Business this coming June 3 to June 6, 2018.

-Congratulations to Lerzan Aksoy and Sertan Kabadayi who, along with their co-authors, won the Highly Commended Paper award for 2017 in the Journal of Services Marketing for "Customer Engagement in a Big Data World." 

-Congratulations to two of our faculty, Sertan Kabadayi, for winning the Dean's Award for Impact, and Mohammad Nejad, for winning the Dean's Award for Teaching Innovation

-Congratulations to Timothy Malefyt for winning the Marketing Area Award for Excellence in Teaching-2017. 

-Congratulations to our MSMI students who presented original research at the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals conference for the second year in a row. They were Supported by Luke Kachersky for research advising and Peter Johnson for presentation coaching. Thanks to our faculty's guidance for this achievement and participation. 

-The Gabelli School co-sponsored the Thought Leadership Hospitality and Tourism Research Forum held on May 10-11, 2018 at Ohio State University. We were represented by four of our area faculty at this year's meeting:

Fordham's MS in Marketing Intelligence (MSMI) program provides students with:
• Career-development workshops and applied projects
