Let's Laugh and Learn Together!

Suddenly, here we are, the second year-end holiday season with a pandemic still hanging over our heads like some evil version of mistletoe. I even got a winter season snowflake mask. Between the mask and the clown nose there is hardly room on my face for my eyes!

Stress is still roller-coastering us along, barrelling along over highs and lows, while we hang on and try not to scream. But I've noticed another sound on the ride. It starts as a little buzz, then starts to sound a bit like a chuckle, and pretty soon it is full-on, joyful laughter. Yes, we have been laughing - because humor is coming back in our lives, our laughter survival instincts are kicking in, and we are using laughter for the health of it to build up our resilience after a long period of time when things were not very funny.

To continue encouraging smiles and laughter, I have some upcoming events.

First, on December 16, 2021, I'll telling some laughter stories and leading laughter exercises at the
Morris County Democratic LGBTQA+ Caucus's Holiday Event (see the picture above). They are even offering some self care box options. Tickets available here.

I will also be doing a free Facebook Live Ugly Sweater Optional Laughter Break to celebrate all my new followers, December 20, 2021 at 7 pm. Watch my facebook page for more information! The session will be recorded and put on my youtube page afterwards.

After the new year, I will be teaching 3 classes for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Rutgers, for the winter session in the new year. The classes are virtual and you can join from anywhere - I've had attendees from all the way in Peru!

The classes will be:

I Was Only Joking: The Ethics Of Humor
Throughout history, both laughter and humor have been used as weapons to hurt, demean and control groups of people as well as to single out someone as the “butt of a joke.” Often the phrases “I was only joking,” “Can’t you take a joke?” and “You have no sense of humor!” are used to defend a passive-aggressive use of humor. This class will explore the seriousness of this issue, discuss the destructive effects of humor used this way as well as some surprising and historic examples of positive use.

Renewal, Revision, and Reinvention After 50

The journey through midlife and beyond can be an unsettling time. For some, the intense striving of young adulthood has cooled, or the twists and turns of life may have led to a very different place than originally planned. Feeling adrift may lead to depression, during a time most expect to be flourishing. As parts of life slow down and change, it creates the perfect opportunity to re-examine one’s sense of meaning and purpose, and create fresh vision for the road that lies ahead.

Taking A Laughter Break for the Health of It
This is my most popular program, especially during the pandemic, people really needed a stress-busting, endorphin releasing, smile-creating funfest.

More information and registration links can be found in the OLLI-RU Webpage.
Classes start in mid-January and you can choose virtual or in person. Classes that don't meet a minimum registration number may be postponed to another session.

Wishing you all happiness, health, laughter and love,
through the holiday season and all through the new year.

Don't go gently, Go Laughing!
