Summertime and the Laughter is Easy!

On June 2, I traveled to Media, PA  (to paraphrase the Wizard of Oz) to hob-nob with my fellow Laughter Wizards. While not quite summer, we were treated to heat and humidity as we laughed and sweated together. Never doubt that laughter is exercise!

During the session I had a chance to talk about the difference between wellness and wellbeing — two phrases that are used interchangeably. These words are so important that the United Nations has included "physical and mental wellbeing" in its Human Rights platform.

Generally, wellness is the complete package, physical and mental health; think body and mind. Wellbeing encompasses inner feelings of happiness, satisfaction, contentment, fulfillment — think heart and soul. One cannot have true wellness without wellbeing. However, even in the absence of wellness, we can have wellbeing.

Laughter is a part of both wellness and wellbeing. There are actual physical health benefits to laughter as well as wellbeing enhancement. Laughter releases endorphins, the feel-good hormone, and using laughter "for the health of it" can get your brain to release those endorphins! Laughter can provide pain relief, mild aerobic exercise, and even lights up the same areas of the brain as meditation!
