February 2015                                             Laughing for the Health of It!
For those of you who didn't see the announcement on FACEBOOK, here is the announcement about the end of the Laughter Club in Jamesburg.

I'd like to thank everyone who has supported the free Smile Side of Life Laughter & Happiness Club in Jamesburg. It has been a fun time, and I have especially fond memories of our World Laughter Day event. But due to falling attendance (so many conflicts for everyone!) I have decided to end the club at this time. This page and the webpage will still be active with helpful information, as well announcements about special events. The monthly newsletter will change as well, into a more information-based service, helping you to bring more laughter, happiness and joy into your life.  And if you are a business, club or other organization looking to book the "Living on the Smile Side of Life" presentation, I am still available for that. Again, thank you all for your support!

But please, continue reading this newsletter to find out how to get a free gift from me,  a great conference for those who are interested in humor and laughter, and links to more articles about humor, laughter and happiness!

Noreen
The Secret Society of Happy People

I've mentioned this "society" before, and it is a great online group that helps you not only bring more happiness into your own life, but shows you how to share with others. They can be found on FACEBOOK at
Happiness In Action ( you need to request to join - tell them Noreen Braman sent you!) or on their webpage at Secret Society of Happy People.

I have been given a number of Pamela Gail Johnson's booklet, Thirty-One Types of Happiness Guide, which helps you recognize different types of happiness. It reads like a daily inspiration and is perfect for reading one entry at a time every day, and then using that day to recognize the humor type mentioned. For example, on the page titled "Celebrate" we are challenged to not only celebrate those big moments in life, but also the small things: days that go mostly right, family dinners, etc. Stopping to give those moments a smile and recognizing the happiness in the moment goes a long way to helping us increase our overall happiness outlook.

If you would like a free copy of this pocket-sized guide, please email me your address and I will mail it out to you. You address will be used only by me for the purposes of sending you this book, nothing else.

Keeping Your Brain Healthy and Active With Humor!
AATH Conference in Philadelphia this May - I'll be there, you can be there too!

Today I received the most wonderful and humbling news. The Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor has awarded me a "Stellar Volunteer" Scholarship to attend their annual conference in Philadephia this May. This great organization is leading the way in the study of the healthful uses of humor and laughter and I have learned so much from them - much of which I have then shared in the Smile Side of Life Laughter & Happiness Club, and presentations. I look forward to absorbing more of their knowledge and wisdom this May, as they present "Stayin' Alive - Keeping your brain healthy and active with humor!" Thank you AATH! I will "do you proud!"

Information on how you can attend
Join in on the informative fun as AATH (Association for Applied & Therapeutic Humor) meets for its 28th annual, international gathering. Come to learn, to share “best practices,” to network, to laugh, to see old friends, to meet new ones, and to be genuinely uplifted by the experience!

Three curriculum tracks to choose from in addition to the Keynote speakers, Workshops, Humor Academy, Research Poster Session, CEUs, and Scholarship opportunities! Information about the conference can be found at www.aath.org.

UPDATE: Are you interested in becoming a Laughter Yoga Leader? See below for a training in March that I will be assisting at:

On March 28 and 29, 2015, the halls of Family Services Organization in Hamilton, New Jersey will ring with laughter, as Beverly Burns, a certified Laughter Yoga Teacher conducts a Laughter Leader training session. In the two-day program, participants will learn about Laughter Yoga, and the physical and psychological benefits that laughter provides. Recent studies have shown that laughter affects the brain in the same way as meditation, and has many health benefits. Laughter Yoga incorporates laughter exercises with pranayama (yogic breathing) to teach you how to “laugh for no reason.” There are no yoga poses and no comedy routines, just simple and fun activities.

What is Laughter Yoga (LY)? This Body-Mind therapy was developed by Dr. Madan Kataria, Physician from Mumbai, India. LY was launched in a Park on March 13, 1995 with merely a handful of persons. Today, it has become a worldwide phenomenon with thousands of laughers in over 70 countries! Ten to fifteen minutes of hearty laughter without jokes or comedy will stimulate your feel good hormones (Endorphins/Serotonin) that last for hours! Once a person completes this two-day training, they are certified to go out on their own and conduct their own Laughter Yoga sessions, for people of all ages and fitness levels.

Proven health benefits include:
· Lowers blood pressure & improves circulation
· provides a light aerobic workout
· Increases deep oxygenation to organs & brain
· Raises self-esteem & lowers anxiety and stress (Cortisol)
· Improves Depression
· Lifts your mood by increasing 'feel good' hormones (Endorphins)
· Increases pain blockers (Dopamine)
· Jumpstarts your immune system
· Aids in combating infections / autoimmune diseases
· Helps one to deeply relax all the muscles
· Reduces stress and body tensions
· Improves one’s sleep
· Increases social skills and trust in a group setting
· Inspires unconditional laughter, joy and playfulness!

No special experience is necessary. Anyone can partake, who can work aerobically standing up and sitting for at least 30 minutes at a time, and is serious about committing to a self-transforming training! All participants will get two full days of practice, learning 50 plus exercises and theory; hot beverages and a delicious lunch; Dr. Kataria’s E-Book: ‘Laugh for No Reason’; Certified Laughter Yoga Leader E-Manual; Your internationally recognized Certificate as a Laughter Therapy-Yoga Leader; and upon completion, from Dr. Kataria’s School of Laughter Yoga:  one year free access to his Prozone member site- Resources & Networking with  Laughter Yoga Leader colleagues locally and from around the world!

The training will be held January 24 & 25 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Family Services Organization (FSO),  3535 Quakerbridge Rd., Hamilton, NJ, Suite 400. For more information, or to register, email: bev_bur@msn.com or call: 732-991-0654. Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes (barefoot is fine too!); bring a mat or blanket to do floor exercises (no strenuous asana) that anyone can do; bring a funny hat for the session about senior laughter yoga.

Cost:  $295 per person, by cash or check in advance.

Ms. Burns, M.Ed., has been passionate about teaching laughter Therapy/Yoga to children of all ages and health conditions since she trained with Dr. Kataria and got LY Leader Certification in 2002. In 2010, she trained with Dr. K. and received her LY Teacher Certification-she has trained Laughter leaders in five trainings since. She has appeared on channel 7 ABC Health News laughing with a group of seniors in their community.   Professionally, she has been a teacher and prevention education specialist, laughing for many years with the special needs population, teachers, teens, children, cancer survivors, seniors and is now bringing laughter to people in recovery.

Ms. Burns will be assisted at her training by Noreen Braman, a certified Laughter Yoga leader and Laughter Wellness instructor. Ms. Braman recently appeared on the EBTV cable television show “Wellness Spotlight” discussing the health benefits of adding more laughter to life. She has laughed with children, seniors, attorneys, caregivers and groups in the financial industry.
