The End of Summer (It's About Time!)

In late August, I can honestly say, that I am done with summer. The heat, the humidity, the mosquitoes that just won’t quit, make me long for the cool freshness of fall. However, the price paid for that is the rapid loss of sunlight which will soon stop illuminating my commute, and again leave me gazing up at the moon and stars as I leave the office.

Recently, I moved into an office with a skylight. I sit directly under it, and only need to look up to view a rectangle of sky. Clouds floating by, days when the clear blue almost hurts the eyes, and afternoons when raindrops race across the glass, forming ever-changing patterns.

As I write this, the light slants from right to left, creating a brilliant bar of light on the wall behind my desk. This light roams around the office walls as the months pass – marking time for me with the sun’s changing position. In winter, the light fades so early I am forced to turn on my daylight bulb desk lamp, but it is a poor substitute.

As September approaches, and we welcome autumn with all the activities that start to ramp up, I will do my best to not mourn the loss of daylight so much, but look forward to the precious patch of sunlight over my head. I will endeavor to not hibernate after sundown or during cold weather, but rather, use this non-sweaty, low humidity, no mosquito, time of year to continue living on the Smile Side of Life.
