Two years ago Cub Scout Pack 3210 that meets at Paris Ridge Elementary School was awarded a grant from the Caledonia Education Foundation (CEF) to purchase a new pinewood derby track. In March of each year, the cub scouts design, assemble and decorate their own pinewood derby car from a kit consisting of a block of wood, axles and wheels. At the highly anticipated race, each boy gets a chance to race their unique car in hopes of having the fastest one. It's a wonderful learning experience centered around teamwork, ingenuity, and sportsmanship. The track has been used not only by this troop but others in the area. A group from the Cub Scout Pack will deliver, set up the track, and run it for others to use.
This year the girls were invited to participate as well in their own Powderpuff Derby. Girl Scout Troop 4698 composed of Daisy and Brownie girls in kindergarten to 3rd grade, designed and built their own derby cars.
"Most of our grants are submitted by Caledonia teachers so it was refreshing to also help fund a community organization like the Girl and Boy Scouts that instills values in our children through many hands-on activities."
