January 31^st brought a Super Blue Blood Moon, but nothing could eclipse the outstanding submissions we received from all of you as our first #EqualSpace Challenge came to a close. Now we’re on to the next phase: the selection process, in which our Advisors and Judges will explore, evaluate, and decide which proposed-sports will get Pre-Visualization Proof Of Concept treatment, so YOU can vote on which ones are really More Challenging Than Anything On Earth™.

So who exactly will be playing these games, anyway? Astroletes, that’s who! In case you need a little refresher, here is the official definition of ASTROLETE®:

Derived from the words “astronaut” and “athlete,” an Astrolete is a person with the spirit of an athlete and the skills of an astronaut and uses both to compete in sports in space. Each of the approximately 554 astronauts today is considered an Astrolete, as is anyone who completes a training program sanctioned by the Space Games Federation.

On a more terrestrial note, in a room filled-to-the-brim with visionary VCs and innovative influencers, SGF Founder Linda Rheinstein and #SpaceCat proved to be the ultimate disruptors at last month’s inaugural Space Tech Summit in San Mateo, CA. Linda shared the stage with award-winning journalist Jeff Foust of Space News in a session titled “To Infinity & Beyond: The Role of Media & Pop Culture Entertainment.”

It was the perfect opportunity to discuss how bringing sports into space will inject a unique sense of play and learning into our intergalactic future via STEAM+ (which, you may remember, is STEAM + space + athletics).
