Sometimes you find random things, just walking around Hope's property
Dear People of Hope,
Perhaps you've heard the joke that pastors only work on Sundays. While I've never heard anything but respect for my work from all of you, you might not know what I do on the non-Sunday days. Especially during the pandemic, sometimes I don't know what I do on the non-Sunday days. To share an example, here's what I did yesterday:
9am - check email to see if anything surprising came up on Monday (when I don't check email);. good news from one property lawyer email, an invitation to leadership from the synod staff, follow up with someone about discernment, plan for finals kits for students
9:45 drive into church office, check the mail
10:30 - interview lawyer for property process on zoom
noon - facilitate small group Huddle for community building and prayer on zoom
1:15 - walk outdoors at Hope, discover unusual thing in the upper parking lot, pictured above; it looks like a vandalized part of a bell tower, but we don't have a bell tower
1:30pm - read and listen to a podcast for sermon preparation
2:20 - greet Alex who came in to practice music at Hope
2:30 - start drafting this newsletter
3:15 - talk to someone who stopped by Hope to mow the lawn; ask if he knows what that unusual thing in the upper parking lot is (he does - it is a broken piece from an electrical wire)
3:30pm - call some church people to check in on heath and pastoral care concerns
4:15pm - drive home; Katesh is quietly reading with our nanny (another pastor's kid who we've known since she was in 8th grade); sit down on the floor to continue reading books; and eventually start dinner preparations
There is no such thing as a typical day. Sometimes I'm out of the church building taking walks with people. Sometimes I spend a lot more time on zoom for different meetings. Sometimes more people come through Hope to water the plants or drop off donations and I'll pause whatever I'm doing to talk. Sometimes I have an evening meeting or do some more emailing or phone calls after dinner. Sometimes I'll find something as unusual as the electric-wire-connector piece, but it'll take longer than a few hours to figure out what it is. One of the things I like most about being a pastor is that it isn't entirely predictable, but it is usually interesting, and it is usually relational with other people.
I'm grateful to serve God through this church and to partner with you all in this ministry- even in the pandemic.
Thank be to God,

PROPERTY DISCERNMENT UPDATE
written by Joan A.
This is the first in a series of reports to keep Hope Congregation updated on progress regarding the property development discernment.
Since December 2020, the Congregation has engaged in several large group meetings, including those with CA Development and the Metro DC Synod. There was also a virtual tour of St Mathews Lutheran Church in DC. Video recording of all these sessions are available on the property google-drive. In addition, there have been four meetings of 3 different small groups. During these various meetings, congregation members have asked questions and provided insights for the Council to consider. Notes from these meetings are available upon request.
Also, the Hope Council has met regularly specifically to engage in discernment regarding the property development proposal. In addition, a Process Planning Group, consisting of Pastors Julie and Ray, Jeff, Pat and Paulette, was formed to develop a detailed process going forward.
Currently the Council is proceeding in two main areas with the purpose of setting parameters for negotiation:
l. Several lawyers have been recommended and have been contacted for interviews. The Interview Committee consists of Pastor Julie, Jeff, Pat and Mona. The team is also meeting with an attorney from the synod.
2. CA Development has been contacted by Pastor Ray regarding specifics of the Letter of intent. So far they have said, if we proceed with this LOI they will cover legal fees up to $25,000; this and additional details (including the important topic of green space) will be subject to professional negotiation as and if we move ahead.
As we move forward, the plan is for the Council to meet weekly and provide continuous updates to the Congregation. Also in the planning is to have another large congregational meeting to share updates and next steps, as well as to invite comments and questions from the congregation.
