Dear People of Hope,

August may get pretty quiet around Hope.  But we're already looking towards the fall when students return to local schools and the University of Maryland.  Watch for announcements about:
  • Collecting Backpacks for kids at Langley Park McCormick Elementary School (bring to Hope by August 21)
  • Preparing and serving the first Humble Walk dinner (Sunday evening, August 28)
  • Young Kids Music and Merrie Movement Classes at Hope (Thursday mornings in September)
  • UMD Football Parking (Saturdays throughout the fall)
These are a mix of ways we at Hope are  living our core values, to be welcoming, growing, and loving our neighbors.

Peace of Christ, Pastor Julie
Collecting Backpacks for Elementary Kids
now through August 21

Hope is collecting backpacks for kids at Langley Park McCormick Elementary School.  To keep things simple this year, we're letting other communities collect school supplies; Hope is only requesting sturdy backpacks.  The goal this year is to donate 30 backpacks.  Bring backpacks to the church between now and August 21.  Langley Park McCormick Elementary School starts Monday August 29!
Mid-year Financial Update from Hope
watch your email

Hope's Treasurers have prepared a mid-year financial update to keep members and regular participants informed about the church's money in 2022.  This information will not be included in this email, nor stored on Hope's website.  It will be sent by email (or paper mail) to members and regular attendees later this week.  If you do not receive it soon and would like to, reach out to Beth in the office: office.hopecp@gmail.com.
Fall UMD Football Parking
Saturdays throughout the fall

Hope is looking for volunteers to help with parking for Maryland home football games this year. This involves a couple of hours of your time, as the volunteers direct people to parking spaces and collect parking payment. It's a great opportunity to extend hospitality and spend some time outdoors on a Saturday afternoon. Even if you can only volunteer for one or two days, your help is appreciated. Contact Liz at eudorcey@yahoo.com if you are interested.
Humble Walk Welcome Back Dinner
Sunday August 28
4:30pm prep, 5 dinner, 6 worship, 7:30 clean up

Students are scheduled to return to campus in a few weeks, and Humble Walk is ready to welcome them to worship and community - including the usual Sunday evening dinner and worship.  Hope is planning to serve the first meal.  And while evening worship is specifically for students, after serving the meal, all ages Hope folks are invited to stay for this opening worship.  Sign up at Hope to bring food for tacos - or talk to Joan A or Nancy Ann G for details.
Special Coffee Hour for Pastor Julie and family
LAST Sunday July 31, after worship

Thank you, all for your prayers and encouragement for our family.  This Sunday's coffee hour was just the perfect blend of relaxed and celebratory.  We could not ask for a more supportive congregation.  I expect I'll be around Hope another week or so, but leaders know that I could call anytime and say, "We're heading to the hospital, you're leading the next worship service..."

I'll miss you all this fall when I'll be home for 12-weeks of parental leave.  And we'll be excited to return, see you all in November, and introduce you to our new family member and church member.

In Gratitude,
Pastor Julie, Silas and Katesh
Sunday Communion Moving Outside
throughout the summer, and likely the fall

As current strains of Covid seem to be highly infectious, Hope plans to move the final 10 minutes of worship outdoors for the remainder of summer, and likely the fall.  Starting last Sunday, worship leaders guided participants outside to bless and share communion.  Leaders also brought a few chair for people who prefer to sit; and we found enough shade in the upper parking lot.  Thank you for your flexibility as we seek to be hospitable to the most vulnerable in our community.

Leaders have been able to bring the zoom community outside as well.  If you worship online, stay on for this final portion of service.
