Dear People of Hope,
This Sunday we commemorate the Protestant Reformation in our morning worship. You are invited to wear red clothing, either in person or on zoom.
This Sunday, we also begin congregational singing at Hope. Our musician, Alex, and I have looked at details relating to covid statistics in our area, spacing in our sanctuary, a worship service shorter than 60 minutes long, and we believe this will be quite safe. We also believe it will significantly enhance our experience of worship and togetherness. Still, we understand that nothing is without risk and everyone has different concerns and comfort levels. Zoom worship continues for anyone who prefers to worship from home.
Next Sunday is All Saints Sunday and we plan to continue congregational singing. Following these two music-heavy services, we will re-evaluate how this impacts our worshiping community and make a clear plan moving forward. Please do talk with me or Alex about any reservations or joys relating to music and singing at Hope.
Peace of Christ, Pastor Julie
movies@hope presents Dick Johnson is Dead Friday October 29, 7:30pm by zoom
This Friday, October 29 at 7:30 p.m., movies@hope proudly presents the Emmy Award-nominated documentary from 2020, Dick Johnson is Dead. Filmmaker Kirsten Johnson decides to make a film about her aging father’s reluctant decision to move from Seattle to live with her in New York. The result is by turns deeply touching and hilarious. Dr. Claudia Thorne, expert on aging and Assistant Professor at Coppin State University, will be on hand to introduce this unique film about the pathos -- and humor -- of growing old.
For those of who may prefer to stream the film independently, it is available for rental on Amazon . You can join zoom for the discussion, beginning around 9:50.
Even though we may not all gather in person, we think it's more important than ever to watch great films with the opportunity to discuss afterwards what we've seen. So please put on some popcorn and join us! Hope to "see" you then, and invite a friend or neighbor, including those who wouldn't usually be able to come out to our regular showings at the church!
Dial-in number is: 301 715 8592

Labyrinth Retreat at St Andrews Saturday, October 30, 9 AM to Noon, Rector’s Lounge at St Andrew's Episcopal Church
St Andrew's Episcopal Church has a new prayer labyrinth and they're inaugurating it with a mini-retreat this Saturday.
Learn the history and use of labyrinths with John Keating, enthusiast and student of this ancient spiritual practice, who has walked many historic labyrinths, including Grace Cathedral (San Francisco) and Chartres Cathedral (France). After a slide-illustrated talk by John, we will walk the new St. Andrew’s labyrinth and discuss the experience with others. Bagels, juice, and coffee provided.
Participants must be masked and keep healthy distance from others. For planning purposes, please email email@example.com if you plan to attend.
Puerto Rico Trip this Winter

Talk to Pastor Julie or Pastor Ray by to make a decision by November 1.
Complete this form to express intent to travel:
The trip costs are set:
Student Rate $450 (plus your airfare), price subsidized by Campus Ministry Grant
Non-Student Rage $650 (plus your airfare)
We have been invited by the Caribbean Synod for an accompaniment/relationship building trip between our ministry and the Puerto Rican Lutheran Church. This trip, like one a few years ago to the Holy Land, will be made up of UMD students and Hope Church as we learn about the people, culture, and church in Puerto Rico. Spanish is not required.
Curious, but not able to travel? There will be plenty of opportunities to pray, learn about, and support this trip from right here as well.
Support Afghan families moving to the area
in the coming weeks; reach out to Mary B to participate
UPDATE: Hope continues to wait until we are matched with a family resettling in this area. We hear there are 344 teams ready to support a family and more than 150 families have resettled so far - so our turn should come in the next few months. Learn more from Mary: firstname.lastname@example.org or 202-509-7991.
