Dear People of Hope,
This Sunday in zoom worship I asked, "How many of you have visited the Holy Land?" Dozens of people raised their hands. I also asked, "How many of you want to visit the Holy Land?" Still more hands rose.
For years Hope has had a relationship with the Lutheran congregations and the justice work in Bethlehem, Jerusalem and the surrounding area. This December we are invited to deepen this connection with an Advent Pilgrimage.
Join others at Hope each Wednesday evening from 8-9pm by zoom. We'll watch a short video together, and talk about themes of hope, peace, love, joy and justice. Join us for the first one tonight:
During the Advent season we often talk a lot about the Holy Land of the past without talking much about the Holy Land of the present. This year, Hope joins ELCA Young Adults and ELCA Peace Not Walls for an Advent Pilgrimage in Palestine, talking about the past and present.
In Peace and Hope,

movies@hope presents While You Were Sleeping Friday December 4, 7:30pm
Join us as movies@hope presents While You Were Sleeping. This Christmas season romantic comedy tells the story of a lonely transit worker whose dreams of true love seem far away, until fate intervenes in the strangest of ways. The young Sandra Bullock stars in this delightful "sleeper" hit from 1995.
Even though we can't gather in person, we think it's more important than ever to watch great films with the opportunity to discuss afterwards what we've seen. So please put on some popcorn and join us! Hope to "see" you then, and invite a friend or neighbor, including those who wouldn't usually be able to come out to our regular showings at the church!
Fundraiser at Franklins to support PG Plaza Day Center Monday December 7, all day
The next fundraiser at Franklin's in Hyattsville is on Monday, December 7. This fundraiser benefits the day center run by Congregations United for Compassion and Empowerment (CUCE). You can eat at Franklin's, order carry-out or delivery for lunch or dinner, or order a gift certificate. The general store is open, so you can get a head start on your Christmas shopping and benefit a local business! Franklin's will donate 20 percent of your before-tax total -- but you must show your receipt to the host to participate. Since June 2017, we have raised $2,894 for the day center through fundraisers at Franklin's! Further information from Franklin's is available at https://www.hopecp.org/home/franklins-fundraiser-information.html.
Give gift cards, support the church Contact Paul T for details
Hope participates in the nationwide Scrip gift card program. Participants buy gift cards at face-value for hundreds of retailers, including Amazon, Starbucks, grocery stories and airlines. And then the church receives a percentage of the sale. With the season of gift giving upon us, now is the time to think about how we can make the best use of this easy and painless way of benefiting our church!
Gift cards can be purchased one of two ways:
1) You can order physical gift cards through Paul T, simply by identifying the retailer and the amount. Paul will then order the cards from Scrip and you can reimburse the church by check when they arrive and Paul delivers them to you. Share your order with Paul by December 13 (email@example.com)
2) Many retailers offer e-gift cards you can order yourself on line. In that case, if you haven't previously enrolled, you must do so at the Scrip website and enter Hope's enrollment code (DB1216C863874) to ensure Hope gets credit for your purchase. Payment for your e-gift cards can be paid for by credit card, by debit from your bank account, or by check to the church. Do this anytime!
Gifts of Hope There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off. Proverbs 23:18
Gifts of Hope, a program within our local ELCA Synod, helps give hope. Our congregation’s support of this program is translated into direct service by local and global organizations that help those in need. Many choose to give in honor of someone they know and end up changing the life of another they don’t know. You can give gifts to support Lutheran summer camps, prison ministry, Lutheran Campus Ministry, churches in Namibia or El Salvador, or lots of other ministries around the region and the world.
This Advent season, will you consider giving a gift of hope? Visit www.giftsofhopedc.org for more information.
Register today to participate and receive information updates about this hands-on event harkening back to familiar nativity scenes. There will be an area for pony rides and an area for petting smaller farm animals. People can register for themselves or for an entire family, social pod, etc. at go.umd.edu/hopezoo
Depending on how many people register, you might get a future email requesting that you designate a particular timeslot to promote social distancing. For now, we just need your basic details. Notes that mask use is mandatory for adults and children 5 years and older, in accordance with Prince George's Country COVID-19 precautions, and hand sanitizing stations will be available.
