What is God Like

Dear People of Hope,
These are some of the best kids books about God that I'm reading right now. Sure, I read them with kids, but they are great books for people of any age, with beautiful pictures and lovely, biblical images of God. Mother's Day and Father's Day are approaching, not religious holidays, but times when we may find ourselves reflecting on the love and care of a parent; these books share images of God as a loving parent, alongside God as a good friend, as 3 dancers, as the wind over the waters. I'll have these books at Hope Sunday if you want to look through them or borrow them from the church library. Perhaps you'll find that they speak to your spirit, your image of God, whatever your age.
Peace of Christ,
Pastor Julie
movies@hope presents Pather Panchali Friday May 12, 7:30pm
This Friday, movies@hope returns with Pather Panchali, recently voted one of the 50 greatest films of all time by the British Film Institute. This heartrending classic of world cinema from 1955 depicts the childhood joys and sorrows of the boy Apu and his elder sister Durga and their family in a poor West Bengali village. Directed by Satyajit Ray, the film is beloved for its lyrical quality and realism, portraying in loving detail the small delights of daily village life. Join your friends and neighbors for the film and discussion afterwards!
The film will be shown at the church only; there will be no Zoom link. Masks are optional, but seating will be spaced to provide social distance. Refreshments will be available!
Collecting for Finals Kits ONE MORE WEEK: now through Sunday May 14
Hope has a long tradition of collecting goodies to support students through the stressful time of finals. If you are able, bring food and drink packets to Hope and place them in a box in the entryway. Then stay after worship on Sunday May 14 while we pack bags with treats.
Items good for finals kits:
granola or other snack bars
chewing gum
tea bags
flavored drink packets
cracker packs
Contact Mary C with any questions.
9:30am Summer Worship at Hope starting in June, accounting for the heat
Do you remember worship at Hope last summer? It was often hot, even with the AC running. Turns out the AC wasn't working properly, and won't be working again this summer. With Hope exploring selling the property, a costly repair doesn't make sense at this time. Council has recommended some changes to make summer worship in person manageable.
In June and July:
Sunday worship will begin at 9:30am, when the air is a little cooler
Fans will be running
Cold drinks are welcome
AC will be running downstairs in the student lounge for people who need a break
Attendees are encouraged to wear weather appropriate clothing
Zoom worship will continue
Contact any member of council to learn more. We'll reevaluate and plan for August, with the hope to return to 10:30am worship in time for UMD's return in the fall.

Community Meals from Methodist Church Every Tuesday and Thursday
Community Meals is a program designed to meet food security needs in the College Park area while providing delicious, healthy food to the community and giving an opportunity for underemployed folks to earn a stipend. This is how it works: They prep and cook delicious food for the community to pick up on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. As you are able, you reserve and donate for a meal for $12. Every meal you reserve and donate for, they give another of the same meal away to a neighbor who can't afford to donate that day. Reservations for Tuesday's meal close Tuesday at noon; reservations for Thursday's meal close on Thursday at noon. Tuesday's meal tends to be Latin American Cuisine or New American, while Thursday is always Afghan cuisine.
