property updates bulletin board style
Dear People of Hope,

See the below update on Hope's property development discernment process.  Council has heard your request for more regular and ongoing information about the process.  This first update is written by council member Joan A.  You can also click on the above
bulletin board format for similar information.  We continue to pray, discern and plan together our faithful next-steps.

Thank be to God,
   Pastor Julie

This is the first in a series of reports to keep Hope Congregation updated on progress regarding the property development discernment.

Since December 2020, the Congregation has engaged in several large group meetings, including those with CA Development and the Metro DC Synod.  There was also a virtual tour of St Mathews Lutheran Church in DC.  Video recording of all these sessions are available on the property google-drive.  In addition, there have been four meetings of 3 different small groups.  During these various meetings, congregation members have asked questions and provided insights for the Council to consider.  Notes from these meetings are available upon request.

Also, the Hope Council has met regularly specifically to engage in discernment regarding the property development proposal.  In addition, a Process Planning Group, consisting of Pastors Julie and Ray, Jeff, Pat and Paulette, was formed to develop a detailed process going forward.

Currently the Council is proceeding in two main areas with the purpose of setting parameters for negotiation:

l. Several lawyers have been recommended and have been contacted for interviews.  The Interview Committee consists of Pastor Julie, Jeff, Pat and Mona.  The team is also meeting with an attorney from the synod.

2. CA Development has been contacted by Pastor Ray regarding specifics of the Letter of intent.  So far they have said, if we proceed with this LOI they will cover legal fees up to $25,000; this and additional details (including the important topic of green space) will be subject to professional negotiation as and if we move ahead.

As we move forward, the plan is for the Council to meet weekly and provide continuous updates to the Congregation.  Also in the planning is to have another large congregational meeting to share updates and next steps, as well as to invite comments and questions from the congregation.

Outdoor Communion returns
various dates, times, locations

This Spring Hope will host several opportunities for outdoor prayer and communion, both at Hope and at various front yards around the area.  Hosting is easy- you simply provide the location with plenty of space and easy parking.  No snacks, no bathrooms, no chairs- just space.  If you would like to host a group in your neighborhood, contact Pastor Julie.

movies@hope presents "76 Days"
Friday May 7, 7:30pm by zoom

Join movies@hope on Friday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m., for  76 Days.  As the world slowly recovers from the worst pandemic in a century, this critically acclaimed documentary captures the trauma of the initial outbreak and subsequent lockdown in Wuhan, China.  Don't miss this riveting story of human struggle and resilience in the face of great adversity. For those of you who may prefer to stream the film, it's available for rental on Amazon, with no charge to Prime members.  You can join us for the discussion, beginning around 9:20.

Even though we can't gather in person, we think it's more important than ever to watch important films and have the opportunity to discuss afterwards what we've seen.  So put on some popcorn and join us!  Hope to "see" you then, and invite a friend or neighbor!

Zeynep shares music resources

Zeynep is a long time choir member at Hope, who also sings, plays and arranges for the Washington Metropolitan Gamer Symphony Orchestra, working with video-game music.  Throughout the pandemic, this group has shifted from in-person music concerts to developing a youtube channel of recordings.  Listen to some of these, with this note from Zeynep about where you can find her familiar face:

I did most to all of the sound editing for the two a cappella pieces, "Promised Land" and "The Pantheon."  Of the small ensemble pieces, I performed in and did some to all of the sound editing for "Manny and Meche," and "Still Alive." I performed in and edited only my parts for "Simian Suite," "Grape Garden," and "Mori no Kokoro," as well as "Carol of the Consoles."  I'm also a performer in "Blue Team" and "Baba Yetu," although I only edited the choral parts for the one and didn't edit anything for the other since that was an old live recording.
