5-7pm - Humble Walk Students Dinner and Worship

Dear People of Hope,

Mary was brave and said yes, on behalf of all of us.  This isn't an Advent story about Mary the mother of Jesus.  This is a right-now Hope story of Mary B in our congregation saying yes that Hope will welcome an Afghan refugee family.

You may remember that Mary has been coordinating Hope's efforts to support an Afghan refugee family moving to the area.  We've been waiting our turn as other communities resettled the first couple hundred families that have come.  This week, Mary was in touch with staff at Lutheran Social Services.  She heard there was a family of 11 people that other communities had said was too big for them to support.  Mary said Hope would accept and support that family.  Now we've received a bit more information - turns out it is actually a family of 12 people: two married adults and 10 children ranging in age from 2-19 years old.  They are just settling into a house in Alexandria, Virginia.

In recent months you all have been donating financially and bringing physical kitchen and household items to Hope.  Mary and her husband Joseph are meeting the family first.  They'll see what the family already has- and then they'll let us all know what kind of support is needed.  We will certainly continue this relationship over the coming weeks and months; we hope to continue over the coming years as well.

Contact Mary directly if you want to be involved - or 202-509-7991.  Or watch for updates here.

You can continue to donate financially and invite others to do so too,  You can send a check to Hope with "Refugee Resettlement" in the memo line.  Or give online, selecting "Refugee Resettlement Fund" in the drop-down menu:

This may not be what we expected.  But I'm grateful that Mary said yes on our behalf.

Peace of Christ,
  Pastor Julie

ps - Worship at Hope now includes congregational singing and indoor communion.  Zoom worship continues for those who prefer an online option.  Starting December 5, we'll be merging technology with Living Water SDA Church, and we expect our zoom experience will improve significantly.

I am away for Thanksgiving this week, returning in time for Sunday worship.  Contact Beth in the office for any administrative needs; contact Pastor Ray with any pastoral care needs.
Advent at Hope
Special worship and events starting Sunday November 28

At morning worship on November 28, we will hear from guest preacher Pastor Franklin Morales from La Sagrada Familia Lutheran Church in Langley Park.  We look forward to hearing his stories.

Saturday December 11, noon-2pm, families and anyone interested are invited to an Advent Petting Zoo, remembering that Jesus was born among animals.  Join the group anytime on Hope's front lawn; invite friends and neighbors.

Wednesday evenings at 6pm we join with All Saints Lutheran Church in Bowie (by zoom) for a book study on "Difficult Words of Jesus."  This is a 6-week study, including 2 weeks in January.  Friends welcome.

Sunday evening, December 19, 7:30pm, as we approach Christmas, Hope will host a Longest Night worship service, for prayer and reflection, acknowledging the pain and grief that this season can hold.  Consider who you might invite to this evening of prayerful reflection.

Friday December 24, at 7:30pm we will gather in person and online for a Christmas Eve worship service with candle light and carols.

Sunday December 26, at 10:30am we gather for worship with lessons and carols, hearing and singing the Christmas story.
Town Hall Zoom - Welcoming our Afghan Neighbor
Tuesday November 30, 7pm
hosted by Lutheran Social Services

Community support of Afghan Allies over the past few months has been crucial to the operations and supportive services LSSNCA provides to arriving refugee families. Next week, national and local resettlement experts will provide updates of the past 3 months and what LSSNCA needs from the community in the coming months to welcome 2,400 Afghan Allies in 2022.

Congregational Meeting
LAST Sunday November 21, 1:30pm by zoom

Thanks to all who participated in last Sunday's congregational meeting.  We voted to approve the mission spending plan (budget), we elected new council members and financial volunteers, we heard property discernment updates.  We are sincerely sorry to anyone who had trouble accessing the meeting by zoom- even after all these months of practice, we had inconsistent log-in information among the various letters and emails.  We think everyone made it in eventually.

Hearty thanks to outgoing volunteers
council members Joan A, Jeff T, Katie E (all who have served as officers throughout their terms)

financial volunteers - Bernice B, Lauren J (each serving many years)

Welcome to incoming volunteers
council members Rose W (new term), Lauren M (re-elected term)

financial volunteers Lori B (financial secretary) and Jeff T (assistant treasurer)
