Advent Petting Zoo at Hope

Dear People of Hope,

This Saturday animals, children and adults of all ages came to Hope to remember that Jesus was born in a stable and the animals greeted the baby Christ.  Some families and UMD students were driving or walking by and stopped just to say hello.  A reporter from College Park Here and Now newspaper also came to see what we were doing.  In 2020, a year when Christmas will be full of loss, this petting zoo was something new, something fun, something with a bit of celebration.

We are nearing Christmas.  Join us for any of the remaining Advent conversations and worship services as we prepare to welcome this Christ child at Christmas.  Wednesday conversations and Sunday worship are listed below.  Join us also on Christmas Eve, when we'll host two worship opportunities:

Thursday December 24, Christmas Eve

5:30-6pm - outdoor worship at Hope
with campfire and holy communion (dress warmly)

8pm - traditional Christmas Eve worship by Zoom

Council invites all to a Community Conversation
Tonight, Tuesday, December 15, 7:30-9pm

Earlier this year, Hope received three proposals from CA Ventures (CA), a nationally respected real estate development company. After several months of discussion, research, discernment, and prayer, the council voted unanimously on December 3, making the below recommendation, which council believes offers the congregation unprecedented opportunity to expand our ministry, to meet the challenges of today, and to ensure that ministry will thrive in this place for the foreseeable future.
The 2020 Congregational Council of Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church and Student Center recommends that Hope begin a congregational process of discernment specifically around the proposal from CA Ventures to purchase the 2.19 acres of land that Hope owns to construct a mixed-use development in exchange for

1) a purchase price of $12 million;
2) a new church structure, which will be two stories high and include 12,000 square feet of space, to be constructed on the northeast corner of the property (at the corner of Guilford Drive and Cornell Avenue), managed entirely by Hope;
3) several apartment units to use for ministry; and
4) 50 underground parking spaces for exclusive church use.

(All details are subject to negotiation; Hope’s current building is approximately 9,000 square feet.)

Join others online TONIGHT as council members share more of their enthusiasm for this opportunity and invite all to participate in discernment for Hope's future.
Give warm things to people at the PG Day Center
between now and January 19

Hope continues our relationship with people at the PG Plaza Day Center, recognizing that this time of year, when the weather gets colder, is a hard time to live outdoors.  The day center can most use:

New socks and underwear
New gloves and hats
Nice jackets
   large sizes especially appreciated

Hope is collecting any of these items between now and January 19.  If you have a key, you can bring things to Hope and place them on a table in the fellowship hall (staff are at Hope intermittently, so you'll need to let yourself in).  Or you may take things to Joan A's house in Berwyn Heights.
Holy Land Pilgrimage, Advent Conversations
Wednesdays, December 16, 23, 8-9pm

Also Wednesday December 16, 9:30am

Hope continues Wednesday evening conversations about the Holy Land of the past and present this Advent season.  This week, we also join others from our synod in viewing a conversation with some of our own Hope leaders and our bishop.  Wednesday December 16, 9:30am Bishop Leila Ortiz will share a conversation with Hope's own Katie E and Karin B about their connections in the Holy Land.

Join any or all of these opportunities to connect.
Give gift cards, support the church
Contact Paul T for details

Hope participates in the nationwide Scrip gift card program.  Participants buy gift cards at face-value for hundreds of retailers, including Amazon, Starbucks, grocery stories and airlines.  And then the church receives a percentage of the sale. With the season of gift giving upon us, now is the time to think about how we can make the best use of this easy and painless way of benefiting our church!

Many retailers offer e-gift cards you can order yourself on line.  In that case, if you haven't previously enrolled, you must do so at the
Scrip website and enter Hope's enrollment code (DB1216C863874) to ensure Hope gets credit for your purchase.  Payment for your e-gift cards can be paid for by credit card, by debit from your bank account, or by check to the church.  Do this anytime!
