A Mini-Retreat on Greif and Lament
Saturday October 10, 2020
10-11am on zoom
Throughout the day on your own
Optional 3pm walk, communion and healing prayer outdoors location TBD
7:45-9pm on zoom
Hosted by: Hope Lutheran Church and Student Center,
St Andrew’s Episcopal Church, and St George’s Episcopal Church
What: A day set apart to connect with others and with God, to pray and reflect, to acknowledge the grief and losses of this particular time and our whole lives generally and to invite God to be with us in our struggles.
Why: There is tremendous loss in our lives, our country, our world. We need to acknowledge and express our grief. And as people of faith, we know we do not go through life alone. This retreat will help us name our grief, both specific and general, personal and collective, contemporary and timeless. This retreat will also invite us to acknowledge and seek God’s presence with us, in all things, including grief.
Who: Anyone interested, especially people connected to the three hosting congregations. And any other family, friends or neighbors who may want to join you, from anywhere in the world.
When, in several parts:
1. 10am-11am: We gather by zoom for introductions, and to learn some tools to guide our prayer for the day.
2. Throughout the day: you are encouraged to pray and reflect on your own.
3. optional 3pm: Some people will choose to meet at an outdoor location (TBD) for outdoor communion, healing prayer, and/or a prayer walk.
4. 7:45-9pm: We gather again by zoom to share experiences and reflections from the day, and to close in prayer together.
5. All zoom meeting will be here:
Meeting ID: 861 7011 4301, Password: 123456
Zoom in from wherever you are able, pray from your own home or a favorite outdoor spot.
In order to give yourself the gift of this retreat, consider how you may carve out time to pray. Perhaps share with your family or housemates that you’d like an hour or two to yourself; if you can, avoid reading the news; consider putting away your phone or other devices; maybe you will drink tea or play soothing music. We know life is unpredictable right now, so give yourself grace for whatever you can manage. And if you are able, plan ahead for some extra spaciousness in your day.
I hope to see many of you this Saturday, online or outdoors.
Blessings of Christ, Pastor Julie
ps- A health update: My family and I have received negative COVID tests. We are back to our usual cautious, but not quarantined practices. Thank you for your care and prayers.

Hope Music youtube channel live now, new music coming each week
If you love the music that Alex and others share on Sunday mornings, you will be glad to know you can re-watch some of your favorites. Follow the link to listen or watch. Thanks be to God for the gift of music! Share this freely with others who may enjoy it.
Front Yard Communion Thanks to all who joined, more coming soon
Throughout September, Hope hosted 4 outdoor prayer and communion services, in different neighborhoods, on different days, at different times. The idea was that this would allow a variety of people to gather in small groups. It worked! A few families came to the 4pm, after-virtual school service. Several retirees came to the weekday noon service. A mix of people came to the Sunday evening and Saturday afternoon services.
It was great to see so many people, with masks, at a safe distance. And it was great to share the sacrament of communion together. We are scheduling the next series of these outdoor events. We will continue to do this for as long as the weather allows.
"John Lewis: Good Trouble" Friday October 9, 7:30pm, outdoors and online
Join us for the recently released documentary John Lewis: Good Trouble. From bold teenager on the frontlines of the civll rights movement of the 1960s to legislative powerhouse and elder stateman, this American icon has left an indelible mark on our country. Don't miss this celebration of Lewis' life and legacy!
Weather permitting, we will be showing the film outside on the lawn at Hope -- wearing masks and practicing social distancing. For that reason, outside spaces are limited, so you must make a reservation with Paul T in advance to claim one of the individual/family spaces. Spaces will be available on a first come, first serve basis. Due to Covid-19, masks must be worn throughout the evening and there will be no refreshments.
Because of the limited spaces available at the church, we will also offer the film on Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86455123132
