Dear People of Hope,

Our church has been blessed with teachers who love God and love kids.  These teachers are now planning for an in-person Vacation Bible School for kids and families.  The theme is based on the book, pictured above.  The teachers share this message:

We are so excited to announce that we will be having Vacation Bible School in person at Hope on Saturday, July 17 from 9:00am-12:15pm!  Our theme this year is "What is God Like?" Activities will be primarily outside, physically distanced, with masks optional for children and adults.  Bring a water bottle and wear your swimsuit.  We will be hearing stories, making crafts, dancing, eating snacks, playing in the sprinkler, and learning about God together in a way that is safe and fun for everyone. Grown-ups are invited (but not required) to stay with kids for the morning event. Please feel free to reach out with any questions about this event. We can't wait to see everyone in person!

Want to volunteer?
Reach out to Beth (office.hopecp@gmail.com)

Want to contribute? VBS is looking for donations of:
  • Tubs to make into drums (oatmeal, pretzel, etc), ideally with lids
  • Grass sprinkler and/or slip’n’slide
You can bring these items to Hope or email Beth to arrange another exchange plan

Thanks be to God,
   Pastor Julie

Synod-Wide, Seminary Hosted, Holy Land Reflection and Conversations
below two dates in August

Many are concerned about the violence throughout the Holy Land this summer during the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict. We are providing an opportunity for you to zoom with Lutheran Palestinian Pastors who are current DMin students at ULS and a Palestinian Christian who recently became a naturalized US citizen:

“Pastoring in Times of Crisis: Three Palestinian Pastors Share Their Stories.”
Saturday, August 7, 9:00 AM

“From Jerusalem to DC: a Palestinian Experience.”
Monday, August 9, 7:00 PM

Participants will have a chance to ask questions and learn about the day to day life of those who’ve been affected by this ongoing conflict in the Middle East. You can register for one or both of these sessions by emailing mzimmann@uls.edu.
In Person Worship at Hope
Sunday July 11, 10:30am, and following weeks

Hope's leadership has made a plan to return to in-person worship this summer.  While nothing is 100% risk-free, we believe that worshiping in our sanctuary, with the windows open or our AC circulating air, with people physically distanced and everyone masked for a time period of less than one hour, is very low risk in terms of COVID.   And we believe the benefits of re-gathering in person will be invaluable.

You can read the letter detailing our safety parameters here:
https://hopecp.org/docs/In-Person_Worship_Letter.pdf

Online worship will continue as well for people who prefer that option.
Synod-Wide Racial Justice Plan
described and linked below
(Hope's own Aaron Z was on this planning team)

The Metro DC Synod Council issued a letter on October 7, 2020, that called on the synod and its congregations to dismantle white supremacy within the church and society-at-large. Moreover, the letter called on the synod to more fully support and embody anti-racism towards Black, Indigenous, and People of Color as a prophetic and central value in its witness of the Gospel.

A Racial Justice Planning Team was formed and held its first meeting on February 23, 2021. The team includes Bishop Ortiz, Vice President Droney, Sheena Foster, Jennifer Slagle Peck, the Rev. Ben Hogue, the Rev. David Trott, and Aaron Zeiler who are members of the synod council and other synod teams, committees, and tables. The team also consulted with the Rev. Carmelo Santos from the churchwide organization. The team met on March 8, April 6, and May 3, 2021, and offered the proposal to the synod council. The synod council unanimously affirmed this plan
(linked here) at its meeting on May 15, 2021, and the synod is moving forward with implementation.

Recently, Hope's council shared a Property Progress Report by zoom.  Leaders shared about hiring lawyers, protecting Hope's interests in this project, learning about zoning regulations, considering affordable housing options, assessing the value of the land, and where we go from here.  If you missed the conversation, you'll be able to find the recording on the google drive soon.  And please continue praying that the Spirit guides our process.
