Dear People of Hope,

This Sunday is the final Sunday before we begin Lent on February 17, Ash Wednesday.  There is a tradition of not saying or singing "Alleluia" for the 6 weeks of Lent, approaching a big celebration at Easter with many "Alleluias".  This year, we bring this tradition into our own homes by burying or hiding the "Alleluia."  Sunday, you're invited to draw or decorate a piece of paper with the word "Alleluia."  Within worship you'll be able to show your "Alleluia," and then we'll take a minute to hide the paper somewhere in our homes.  On Easter Sunday, you'll be able to go and find your "Alleluia" and share it in worship again.

Lent opens next week with Ash Wednesday worship services.  Bundle up if you want to come for an in-person, outdoor worship at noon at Hope- we'll share Holy Communion together.  Or stay home and join a 7:30pm worship on zoom.  Either way, we'll hear scripture, prayer, and the story of God's presence in our world.

Peace of Christ, Pastor Julie

Join a Property Discernment Small Group
Various dates, starting in Lent

You have heard that Hope has been approached by a developer with interest in redeveloping Hope’s land; you have heard that the Congregation Council recommends we seriously consider this offer; you have heard a decent amount about the proposal.

Now it is your chance to talk, ask more questions and discern in community.  Join a small group to share more of your thoughts, hear from others, and consider this possibility for Hope’s future.  Groups will meet every other week, 4 times (excluding Holy Week).  We hope you can choose one group and attend regularly.  Choose the day or time that works best for you.

Fundraiser for PG Day Center
Nando's donates 40% of orders!

Tuesday February 23, 4-8pm

In a few weeks, Nando's on Rt 1 in College Park will donate 40% of their dinner orders to CUCE (Congregations United for Compassion and Empowerment) and the PG Plaza Day Center ministry. Nando's specializes in a South African way of preparing chicken and it's terrific.  Carry out orders can request everything from no spice to lots of heat.

Donating 40% is a BIG DEAL! Consider encouraging neighbors to place orders for a certain time slot- then offering to pick up all the orders and bring them to your house for easier donating.

View the menu and place orders on Nando's website:
Continued support for ongoing grief
Opportunities to support and give

We continue to pray for the family and friends of Jude as they mourn Jude's death, using this and other prayers:

O God, support us all the day long of this troubled life, until the shadows lengthen and the evening comes and the busy world is hushed, the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then, in your mercy, grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Jude was an active participant in (Re)Born This Way, a Christian small group for LGBTQ+ students.  Donations in Jude's name to support this effort may be accepted at

You may also want some resources to reflect and pray through your own grief, over Jude's death or other losses in your life.  The resource packed from October's grief retreat is still available here:
