Dear People of Hope,
We continue through Lent and have ongoing opportunities to worship, pray, learn and serve together.
Tonight we gather for soup and prayer at Hope. Our guest speaker is Silas K who will share stories of contemporary saints who led him to a life of Christian faith.
This Sunday we listen to the lives of artist saints. Then after worship Hannah S and I will lead a time to explore spiritual arts. No experience necessary; we'll guide you through a poetry exercise and some visual arts exploration.
In the coming weeks, we have a few opportunities to work together. Sunday April 14 after worship, bring a packed lunch. From noon-2pm we invite our neighbors from Living Water SDA and Hope's AA groups to join in a full inside/outside clean up day. Then Saturday April 20, just before Easter, come from 3-5pm to decorate the inside of the church for the festive next day.
I hope to see you for some of these events.
Peace of Christ,

Joyful News from Pastor Julie and Silas September 2019
[A note from Pastor Julie]: My husband Silas and I share the joyful news that we are expecting a baby. Many of you know we love children and we are excited to welcome one this fall. Here are some details:
1) Baby due mid-September; so far baby and I are both healthy
2) We don't plan to find out the sex ahead of time
3) I am working with council to make a good plan supporting Hope for the weeks of my parental leave; and I look forward to returning and continuing ministry at Hope following these weeks
4) We're telling Silas's work in a couple more weeks so you won't see this on facebook for a while
5) We welcome your prayers!
Thank you for sharing our joy.
March Social Gathering Game Night THIS Friday, March 29, 7:00-9:00 pm
Join us at Hope. Our plan is to simply have fun together. Games and snacks will be provided, but feel free to bring a game if you'd like.
News of the Community:
movies@hope: On Friday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m., movies@hope teams up with Humble Walk to proudly present A People Uncounted. This riveting documentary from 2011 will be introduced by a scholar from the University of Maryland, and tells the tale of the Romani people, who are thought to have migrated from northern India to Europe 1500 years ago. Long viewed as unwanted outsiders in Europe and North America, the Romani people suffered genocide under Nazi Germany and continue to exist on the margins of society in Hungary and elsewhere. Students from Humble Walk will be traveling to Hungary later this spring to assess the situation firsthand. As always, admissions and refreshments are free! We hope to see you there, and why not invite a friend or neighbor?
Seeking Readers: During Holy Week there will be several worship services with additional reading parts. If you would like to read, please contact Pastor Julie. Let her know if you prefer a small part or if any size reading is fine. You may choose if you'd like to read Palm Sunday (April 14, 10am), Good Friday (April 19, 7:30pm), or both/either. If you've never read at Hope, this could be a fun way to try it out. Between the two services, there will be about 20 reading parts, so don't be shy. You will receive the reading ahead of time so you can practice at home. It is a powerful reflection of God's story to hear different voices in worship.
Seeking Children’s Books: Lutheran Campus Ministry’s weekly mentoring program, CARing Kids, builds self-esteem and develops self-image and social abilities through improving the language, reading, and math skills in local, at-risk elementary school children. Between now and May 5th they seek to replenish the library of 1st to 6th grade books. All donations of new or gently used books are welcome and tax deductible. Contact Hope’s office for more information about the book drive and Lutheranterps.com about our program.
Community Photo Directory: Thursday April 4, 2-9pm we are taking photos for a new photo directory. All photo slots are currently full. We are awaiting information about more photo slots, either April 4 or another day. Stay tuned!
Living Water SDA Invitation: Every Saturday a Seventh Day Adventist Congregation worships at Hope. On Saturday April 13, they have a special service of foot washing and holy communion and we are invited to join them. Watch for details and the specific time. This will be a meaningful experience to join our siblings in Christian faith.
From the Easter Bunny: Hope is collecting donations of plastic eggs and treats to put inside for the children's egg hunt this Easter. Special appreciation for non-food items because of kids' possible allergies: look for stickers, tiny toys, hand stamps, bubbles, etc. There will be a collection box in the entryway at Hope.
Easter Lilies: Hope is accepting orders for Easter Lilies. You may donate a lily in memory of someone who has died or in honor of someone who is living. Hope uses the plants to decorate for Easter morning worship, then after worship, you may take the plants home with you. Each plant is $12; you can find order forms in the entryway at Hope or by contacting Beth in the church office.
Food Donations: If you bring food to donate to the boxes at the front of the worship space, these things end up at the College Park Food Pantry. In February, the pantry served 339 individuals (33% children). Thank you to all who donate.
Moms in Community Group: Hope is beginning a drop-in support group, Moms in Community, for pregnant women and new and breastfeeding moms. People may come for free support and connection, to meet other parents and parents-to-be, to relax with tea, snacks, and conversation. A professional lactation consultant (IBCLC) will be present to answer any questions and offer additional support. Older siblings welcome. Contact Paulette T with any questions.
Stream clean up: Humble Walkers Laura and Dan, have created an adoptive group of the stream outside of our church called Friends of Guilford Run. They will lead a stream clean up and beautification event on March 30th, 1-3pm. They welcome any volunteers from the congregation to come and care for creation and the greater community spaces around our church. There will be litter pick up, raking, weed pulling, and prepping planting sites. Please wear sturdy shoes and long pants and bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated. They will provide gloves, bags, and tools. There is a Facebook page titled "Friends of Guilford Run" you are interested in more information.
Inviting New Worship Assistants: Sunday morning a large group of people volunteers to support worship- and we’re inviting more. Our theology is that anyone may serve in any role. If you’re interested, contact Joan A and she’ll make sure you learn what you need to know and get added to the rotation. Some options are:
• Altar Care – prepare the space for Communion and clean up after
• Usher – welcome people to worship and guide them forward for communion
• Communion Assistant – serve the wine
• Assisting Minister – sit up front with the pastor and lead parts of worship
• Offering counter – work with a partner to record the money given after worship
• Coffee Hour Host – make coffee and bring snacks to support fellowship after worship
Interested in something you don’t see here? Just ask.
Kids Sunday School: Children and families are invited at 9am one Sunday per month to learn the stories of faith and have a great time together. This semester we'll gather the First Sunday of each month: April 7 and May 5.
