Atik Infinity
We’re excited to announce the Atik Infinity - our first camera dedicated to video astronomy. We’re currently in the testing stage of development, but we were so pleased with the results of our first light that we couldn’t resist telling you about it.

The camera uses the phenomenal Sony ICX825 sensor with EXview HAD CCD II™ technology for the same incredible sensitivity of the Atik 414EX, with outstanding Quantum Efficiency and low noise. Where it differs is in the custom control electronics engineered for optimum near-live view display to bring the wonders of the deep sky closer than ever. Even at f/8, we could easily see globular clusters and planetary nebula appear in just seconds, making this the perfect tool for observing objects that would normally be too faint for an eyepiece, and in unprecedented detail.

Why video astronomy?

It’s always been our goal to make astrophotography accessible to as many people as possible, bringing quality without compromise to the novice and professional alike. We also believe in the power of astrophotography to provide incredible insights into the night-sky that just aren’t possible with visual observation.

But we also recognise that a lot of people want to see the wonders of the deep sky without the long exposures and post-processing involved with astrophotography. That’s why we’re so excited about the Infinity.

While webcams can be an excellent solution for viewing bright objects in our own solar system, deep-sky video astronomy faces the ever-familiar challenges of faint signals and background noise. We’ve applied our extensive experience of meeting these challenges in astrophotography and brought them to video astronomy.

The techniques involved are quite different, making this a very different type of camera to our existing range. For example, the Infinity isn’t cooled as the exposure times involved are much shorter to get as close to live view as possible and the ICX825 sensor has such low dark noise that we can negate this with our new custom software.

Over the next week we’ll be sharing the results of our first light across our online channels so you can see first-hand why we already love this camera.

Custom Software

To get the absolute best performance from the Infinity, we’ve created a custom software application designed and optimised specifically for video astronomy. Our favourite features include continuous live-stacking, intelligent histogram function and mode selection to switch easily between finding and viewing objects.

The Atik Infinity will be on sale early Autumn, and in the mean time, watch out for the latest performance tests and developments as we put the Infinity through its paces.
