Amazingly Powerful Foodstuff

Dear Readers who dwell in vegetives,

It might not occur to you, but each week when you’re picking up your shares, you’re helping us to solve all the world’s problems with food. It sort of looks like a farmer’s market because the vegetables are shining there on the tables, but it’s not exactly. It’s kind of like any other service you subscribe to, but it does a little more than get a product from one place to another at a bundled rate. What we’re packaging for you is an elegant solution to a bunch of the things we worry about, from a changing climate to income inequality, from ecological uncertainty to health epidemics. The principles of permaculture view all of these problems as interconnected and advise that the solutions must be as well.

Our non-profit program aims to build a system which supports local farmers to grow food sustainably to protect our land, our air, and our waterways, keeping our dollars in our region while simultaneously reaching out to areas most in need of healthy fresh food and investing in communities that make this act not merely a distribution of commodities but a building of local culture. We’re treating disease, not just symptoms.

The prescription I most return to is Fun. You must approach this world-saving lightly. Enjoy this. Make the food taste delicious. Savor the crispness and depth of flavor of all these late summer delicacies. The cucumbers from Peru in February will not be as sweet. The accidents of nature – when a potato grown in dirt has a spot, or an apple took a fall and got bruised – seem so less forgivable when they’ve bothered to travel halfway round the world to meet our lips. If I fail to eat my City Fresh tomato quickly enough or leave it too long in the car and it goes, I shrug and feed it to my compost. At least its purchase was from the love of volunteers and supports a community. Life is too short not to just cut off the bad part and feed what’s good to the end-of-week City Fresh soup.

To make the most Fun, I like to chop my tomatoes and garlic with basil from my garden, layer it on slices of fresh mozzarella and crusty bread, and to then serve this to guests with heaps of laughter and wine.

To roast an eggplant in the oven, scoop its innards out and smoosh them up with garlic, tahini, and lemon, then to spread it over pita and top with tomato, cucumber, and parsley, crunching these wraps for lunch with a little person who’s currently obsessed with Harry Potter or who tells me all about their first week of school.

To scramble eggs with diced cherry tomatoes and sweet bell pepper, sprinkle with cilantro, and layer on a tortilla for a quiet breakfast alone, watching the birds in the yard, savoring my coffee, and soaking in the silence.

Food is the stuff of memories, the stuff of healing, the stuff of connection. Food is the thread that gives color to our experiences. We at City Fresh think it can do so much more.

Peace and veggies,
