Another Exciting Adventure In Vegetalia

Hail! Misfit Gang of Culinary Explorers!

Look! In the fields, in your neighborhood, in your kitchen - it's this week's collection of daredevil fruits and vegetables! Here they are ready to delight and ensnare your taste buds, ready to challenge your knife technique, ready to awaken your stove top moxie! Have you got what it takes? Can you handle it?

The delicious thing about this week's Single Share is that you could almost chop everything up and put it in one meal. Potatoes, summer squash, pepper, and green beans all compliment one another beautifully. My neighbor and I talk recipes every time we see one another. She likes to roast almost everything while I'm super into sautés. The idea is basically the same, though - chop your vegetables, put a little oil on them, salt, pepper, and whatever seasonings you see fit, then cook it.

The seasoning is where it gets really interesting. If you start with whole cumin seeds, black mustard seeds, and cloves of garlic in your pan, your potato/summer squash/pepper/green bean mix becomes an Indian dish. Do them up on the grill in a foil pack or in a grill basket or skillet, and finish with a bit of your fresh dill and suddenly you're transformed into a picture of fresh summer eating! You can pretend that you're in the Hamptons with impossibly white teeth, smiling out of some Ralph Lauren ad.

You can also cook them up with some eggs and make a Sunday hash. Drink mimosas and enjoy toast and fresh fruit, or cook bacon and grill your tomato cut in quarters. This works just as well on a Wednesday evening as on a Sunday morning, since Wednesday dinners often need rescuing with Herculean prowess.

With all the tasty items in the Family Share this week, it will take a preternatural know-how to save anything til next week's pickup. Melon season arrives this week, and with it, my very favoritest part of the City Fresh season - the Melon Bucket Brigade. I've warned all our volunteers that fun is now mandatory, so be on the lookout for raucous laughter and contagious hilarity at our Fresh Stops this week as they try not to drop your precious cantaloupe in the melon toss. Better yet, join in! What better way is there to give back to your community, contribute to economic independence for local farmers, and help feed those in need than by throwing melons through the air in 85-degree weather? No better way, I tell ya!

Once all the melons are properly mishandled, it's then equally fun to build pyramid structures out of them and make sure that the Fresh Stop has the correct number. By volunteering with City Fresh, you join a team of Food Justice Warriors, sworn to build a just food system which brings tasty, locally grown treats from the farm to your family! Join us!
