Message from the Chair

The spring semester seems to finally be holding the promise of warmer days, and the Curriculum in Global Studies is ready to meet the thaw with some exciting opportunities for students and the wider Carolina community. In April we will be co-sponsoring two “student’s choice” visiting lectures alongside of visits of other scholars from around the world. One of the highlights this month was a visit by Kevin “KAL”’ Kallaugher, whose illustrated lecture on “Political Cartooning after Charlie Hebdo” captivated the audience and attracted the attention of local media. We have also been exploring new ways to support and encourage our undergraduate and graduate students with small grants and network-building opportunities within and beyond UNC. In addition to kick-starting collaboration with NC State, our first cohort of Masters students has successfully secured a range of competitive grant and study awards including the FLAS (Foreign Language Area Studies) fellowship. In the meantime, our faculty is engaging global audiences in scholarship and policy, producing new and unique research, and winning awards for teaching. We are especially looking forward to celebrating the graduation of the Class of 2015 on Sunday, May 10! (Be sure to check out the details for commencement on our website). - Elizabeth Olson

Faculty Research Spotlight

Global Studies Joint Faculty member Townsend Middleton, a cultural anthropologist, focuses on tribal recognition and autonomy in the Himalayas.  Engaging in research directly with communities as well as government personnel provides insights on impact of government recognition and programs on everyday lives. Learn more about Professor Middleton's research on our website.

New Global Studies Staff Member

The Curriculum in Global Studies welcomes Zach Ward as the Student Services Specialist. In this capacity, Zach will oversee the day-to-day management of all student services, in the areas of admissions, financial aid, outreach, and course registration, for both undergraduate and graduate students. He’s excited about the opportunity to support such a dynamic program and work with such amazing faculty, staff, and students. Apart from higher education, some of Zach’s interests include tennis, collegiate sports, hiking, photography, This American Life, and North Carolina barbecue.

Master Program Collaboration with NC State

The Global Studies MA Program is excited to announce a new collaboration with the Masters of International Studies (MIS) program at NC State. Through this program, students and faculty will connect for research, career opportunities, and more. The collaboration kicked off this spring with a Careers Showcase event at NC State on March 20th featuring alumni from the MIS program.
