NEWS FROM THE 2020 AGED CARE CONFERENCE

New Zealand Aged Care Association Conference 2020
Aged Care in a Pandemic World

November 17th & 18th | Wellington

Nitrogenx were proud to support and attend the Aged Care Conference in Wellington last month. The conference saw over 350 attendees from Aged Care Facilities around the country come together for two days of speakers and panel discussions. The focus of the conference was the challenges and changes that were brought about by the global COVID-19 pandemic.

The opening address by Dr Ashley Bloomfield was received with admiration for a job well done, as he discussed New Zealand’s elimination strategy and the ongoing implications and opportunities we have to improve and learn. One of the panel discussions, Managing COVID-19 Outbreaks in Rest Homes, saw a panel that included team members from facilities that were directly impacted by COVID-19 outbreaks. It was interesting to hear their challenges, of which there were many – and not just while they were at work – and their learnings for the future.

The trade show saw a wide variety of suppliers to the aged care industry and the delegates engaged with everyone. Karen Houghton (Regional Business Manager WBOP) and Rouzelle Coetzee (Key Account Manager AKL) enjoyed their time interacting with a wide range of delegates and were excited to be able to offer a weekend away to Whangamata in our newsletter subscription prize draw.

AND THE PRIZE DRAW WINNERS FROM THE AGED CARE CONFERENCE ARE.....

Congratulations to Katherine McLeod from Kenwyn Home who was the lucky winner of our weekend away to Whangamata.
Congratulations to Clare Tulett from Radius Care who was the winner of our runner–up Morning Tea shout! Congratulations Clare!

THE BEST PART OF CHRISTMAS IS GIVING!

UNDERSTANDING CONTROLLED WASTE - WHAT IS BEST PRACTICE?

It would be safe to say that most healthcare facilities, whether they are doctors, dentists, veterinarians, aged care facility, cosmetic clinics or others; are generating Controlled Waste.

Controlled Waste is defined by the NZS 4304:2002 Management of Healthcare Waste as:
Healthcare waste that is recognizable as coming from a healthcare facility which:
  • May be contaminated or soiled with potentially infectious human or animal body fluids which shall not be expressible under compaction; or
  •  Is not infectious but may be considered culturally or aesthetically offensive.
The Standard also provides clear guidance around how this type of waste should be pre-treated and subsequently disposed of for best practice. If you're not sure what you're doing with your Controlled Waste, get up to date by clicking the button below read the full article.

AN UPDATE ON OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS

Written By Nicola from Flame Cambodia

An update from Nicola describes how the whole of Cambodia went into another compulsory two week lockdown. Schools were closed, including the Flame after school activity centres, cinemas and places of public gathering and the city became quite quiet again. But, the two week shut down finished on 23rd November, with no community transmissions, so again, another bullet has been dodged.

So, here we are again with all of our After School Centres up and running again since Monday, and we are ensuring that each child follows the COVID-19 safety regulations with hand sanitizing, temperature taking and some mask wearing by some people. As you can see in the picture below - actually not that much mask wearing since there is zero community transmission.
