"Child sexual abuse is a horrible crime against the most vulnerable members of society. But this crime can be prevented. Children have to know they have the right to say no, they have to be informed about the dangers of internet, they have to know where they can seek help. We need to raise public awareness and train the professionals of education, care, medicine and others on the early detection of signs of child sexual abuse.

The abused child as well as their family has to be protected and assisted. In order to avoid revictimization, repetitive or lengthy interviews should be avoided and the criminal proceedings should be held in a child friendly way. All implicated agencies should work together in a coordinated way, always keeping in mind the best interest of the child. National legislations must be updated regularly, in order to cover all aspects and criminalize all forms of child sexual abuse. Children have the right to be protected against sexual abuse!" Claude Janizzi, the Vice-Chairperson of the Lanzarote Committee, Council of Europe.

November 20th, Celebrating the UN Convention of the Rights of the child

Every year child rights NGOs take stock of the situation of children's rights on November 20th, the anniversary of the signing of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. While last year was special because of the 25th anniversary, this year is important too. Our current efforts need to focus on getting the third Optional Protocol on a communication procedure ratified by our countries. The NGO Group for the CRC has put together an advocacy toolkit to help organisations to do this. The Protocol will allow individual children to submit complaints regarding specific violations of their rights.

Visit childhub.org for more resources on the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
