"I am the light of the world." -  Jesus
It seems like it was just yesterday I was putting away all our Christmas decorations and now - boom - its time to put them all up again. Yes, it is that time of year again - Christmas!  As I unravel all my light strings (How do they get so tangled up each year?) I am excited as I love the bright lights of Christmas. Red lights, green lights, yellow lights and blue. But my favourite type of light is the old school white lights that brightly reflect off of the snow making it glisten like sparkly stars on the ground. Beautiful, warm and inviting light that pushes out the darkness with its bright hues.

This is how Jesus describes himself;

"I am the light of the world!" (John 8:12)

Jesus, himself is, beautiful, warm and inviting and he pushes out the darkness with his bright hues.

At Christmas we are reminded of a little baby born who grew as the light of the world! And we, the followers of this great light, are in effect his bright hues that Jesus shines through to push back the darkness in our world today!

What an exciting purpose we all have as followers of THE LIGHT of the world.

So, remember this. Each time you see the bright lights of Christmas think of Jesus the light of the world and consider how each bulb represents a follower of Jesus joining other Jesus followers into being a wonderful string of lights reflecting Christ in a dark world through acts of kindness, peace and a Gospel message of hope. This is how we will turn back the darkness and bring people into the kingdom of light! This is what we are committed to here at Connect City!

Look at this picture & ask yourself this question:

"What if God raises up a new generation of leaders, from a variety of cultures & struggling backgrounds who follow Jesus with all their hearts? What if they look different then us? Act different then us? Are different then us?"

This is the now and the future. This is the kingdom of God at work among us!

God is on the move in our city. Toronto is teeming with so many opportunities to grow the mission of Jesus through simple and unique expressions of mission driven churches planted in various urban neighbourhoods and cultures driven by passionate young people with a heart for God and those he loves - everyone. Our team is growing as people encounter Jesus through our community of young Jesus followers.

We’re poor, gritty and willing to follow Christ everywhere he chooses to lead us. Come to think of it we will always be poor, gritty and willing to follow Christ everywhere he chooses to lead us because the more support we receive the more churches we will plant - low overhead, big impact!

Dream this dream with us and join Connect City!
"Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. - 1 Timothy 4:12

Training young adult leaders to be disciples of Jesus in their neighbourhoods is a big part of what we do here at Connect. Having these leaders plant and lead unique churches to effectively be Jesus in their under - resourced neighbourhoods is both a necessity and thrill for us to be a part of. By supporting Connect City you also help plant churches and develop leaders like Devon here - proudly wearing a hotel robe from our training time in Montreal - to grow in Christ and be equipped to make an impact in his Scarborough community.
This past October we had the honour to bring 11 of our young leaders to the Gideon Way conference in Montreal. It was a joy to be involved in this conference with our Mennonite church planting partners from Ontario and Quebec.  This event was a perfect fit for our young leaders since they are at the forefront of our church planting here in Toronto. We were blessed by our Speaker from California - Jeff Wright - who challenged us to be innovative leaders who God uses to make a big impact for the kingdom even if we serve with limited resources. What a timely message for us since all of our young leaders are from under - resourced neighbourhoods where we can’t help but serve with very limited resources. We also were able to help lead the event through our  worship band. It was so good to see our young leaders on the stage leading 80 plus people in worship!

Aside from the actual conference itself we enjoyed our time together bonding as a team. I was able to rent 3 rooms at a local hotel and for our people this was a huge blessing since many from our team have never been in a hotel in their life! They were so amazed by what a hotel offers and so thankful to have had the hotel experience. We also bonded over our meals together as well as some sight seeing in Montreal since most of our team have never been to Montreal.

One of the many highlights of our trip was the last day before we left to go home. We had all of our team gather in one spot to share one thing they learned from the weekend that they can apply back home. We spent over an hour sharing and listening to one another learning from each other what God was saying to us as a team. We now have a lot to follow up on in the days and weeks to come.
Personally, for me, I was so happy to be able to spend a solid weekend with my young leaders and to get to know all of them better. My goal for the weekend was to listen and watch them in action to see how they have matured as leaders.  I was very encouraged by what I observed and heard from them. This is a solid group of young leaders who enjoy being together and growing together emotionally, spiritually and in number. These are the new generation and they are having a big impact on their neighbourhood and on many people.

Jon in teaching mode and enjoying a birthday celebration
If you haven't met Jon Folkeringa you have missed out on a wonderful blessing. Jon has many talents and a great track record holding a University degree, years of experience working at Muskoka Woods Sports Resort and mission experience as a missionary kid living in Haiti. So, we were delighted when Jon asked us if he could work with us for a year as an intern at Connect.  In his words - he wanted to see if he had a call to  full - time ministry - so we welcomed him on board to serve with us as an intern.

We at Connect have had the privilege to watch Jon in action and saw his wisdom and deep love for God and others. We also felt challenged in trying to help him feed his ferocious appetite to get to know the Word of God better. We were impressed by his willingness to personally sacrifice a lot to be able to serve with us here at Connect living off of an intern salary. What amazing qualities!!!   Our goal for Jon was what it is for all of our interns. When we bring on interns we hope to see if they are called to the type of work we do and in return, they also have the opportunity to experience a possible calling to join us. After serving with us for over a year I can tell you - Jon is called!!  He is really, really called!  In every aspect of our ministry we have seen Jon fit in like a glove. He has helped us tremendously at both churches we lead. At SoulHouse he has been a tremendous teacher and facilitator and a good friend to many there.  At Warden Underground he has also been a teacher but he has also become a big brother figure for many of the young people in this young church. In every aspect of his being and ministry Jon has truly proven himself faithful in the work we do so we asked him if he would like to join us on staff and be officially a Connect staff member. We were so glad he said; "yes".

Now the fun starts. Jon is in the process of raising his support as a missionary here at Connect City. He needs a team of people that will stand with him in prayer, encouragement, counsel and financial support. He continues to serve in both of our churches and also works part - time jobs just to allow himself the means to keep serving with us at Connect. His heart and passion are clearly on display for those who are hurting and need Jesus - that is his clear calling.

So, if you are interested in supporting or learning more about Jon please let us know so that we can connect you with him. Our prayer is that by this coming summer Jon will have raised his support to come on board with us full - time at Connect City. You can give directly to Jon through CanadaHelps by clicking on the "Click To Support Connect City" button below on this newsletter and designate your gift to the "Folkeringa Fund"
Please pray for Colin as he heads off on various speaking events. Pray that his words will be drenched in the Spirit as he shares from Scripture God's heart for people & especially for those who are the voiceless.

Help us build leaders in our city who will lead simple churches to be beacons of light in the darkness of our urban neighbourhoods.
Jesus said he is the light of the world and told us to;

"Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." - Matthew 5:16

We sure do a lot at Connect City & we couldn't do it without God working through people like you.

With your help we seek to shine the light of Jesus in our city by being the body of Christ planted throughout neighbourhoods in simple, "New Testament" type churches through hospitality, kindness & Spirit - filled love for Jesus & others.

We don't have high tech programs or expensive buildings to maintain but focus on people through loving mission & nurturing relationships meeting in homes, community centers or any other place that is welcoming to people. We envision that one day we will see hundreds of simple churches spreading throughout our city as beacons of light amidst the darkness & despair that is present in far too many neighbourhoods. This is why we are serious about building young leaders to build inner - city churches that participate in the progress of the Gospel in government housing projects & beyond.
Please consider how you can be part of our simple church movement through supporting us financially or in prayer or even volunteering. We depend on God's people to provide the support our pastors / missionaries need so they can be freed up to serve their communities & the people they reach among the poor & hurting.
