A Sky Painted Gold by Laura Wood

This YA novel is set in 1920s Cornwall, where a local girl gets caught up in the lives of the rich lords and ladies visiting for the summer from high society London . She becomes part of their group, partying with them at their indulgent, expensive Gatsby-style events, and bickering with the handsome but enigmatic older brother (who is, tragically, already engaged). This is the most perfectly indulgent guilty pleasure read.I described it as The Camomile Lawn meets Dodie Smith meets The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets (all of which you should also read).

As today's book is set in Cornwall, the recipe I pair with it absolutely needs to include clotted cream. As Lou also eats quite a lot of apples during the book, I'm going to share a recipe for apple turnovers.

Apple turnovers

These are quick, easy, and absolutely delicious. Enjoy.

Peel and chop an apple per person, in a type of your choice (cooking apples are recommended, but Braeburn also works very well). Add to a pan with a few spoonfuls of sugar (the amount depends on your apple, but add to taste), 2 tsp cinnamon and 150ml of water. Heat until tender, then stir in the juice of a lemon.

Take some ready made puff pastry (I'm not going to tell you to make your own - I'm not Paul Hollywood) and sprinkle with more sugar and cinnamon, then slice into rectangles about 8cm by 5cm, and 0.5cm thick.

Scoop the apple puree into the centre of each rectangle and fold over on the diagonal to form a triangle. You don't need to press down the edges firmly, as ideally we want to be able to peek at the apple inside when they're cooked. Brush with egg and cook at 205C for 20 minutes, until the bottoms are brown.

Whip up some double cream, or purchase a packet of already-clotted cream (and fight off anyone who tries to eat it before you can serve the turnovers). When the turnovers are cool, spoon the cream into the centre and serve!

And you're done! This is such a Cornwall dish that I'm now longing for the sea. Enjoy!
