October 2019 Newsletter

Dear SJB Community,

I am happy to report that the students at SJB have had a very positive start to the school year and are settling quite nicely into the routines of everyday school life.  We are saddened by the recent passing of former SJB students, Lindsey Sunder, but we are dealing with it as a community, and with the support of our Faith. All our thoughts and prayers go out to the Sunder family and friends.

All students should be on google classroom, and parents should be signed up as guardians to receive updates.  This is a great way to stay connected with what's going on in your child's classes and to be aware of the homework and projects assigned and their due dates.  If you have not signed up as a guardian to your child's classes, please email their teachers for guidance.

Thank you to the many students and their parents who have made it a priority to come to school in full and proper uniform.  The uniform is an important aspect of our school and should be worn well.  As a reminder, all the core pieces of the uniform (pants, kilt and shirts) must be purchased from our official uniform supplier, NEAT UNIFORMS.  Shoes must be ALL BLACK.  Socks for the girls when they wear the kilt must either be KNEE HIGH or full tights.

Our first school-wide fundraiser is coming up.  TRIVIA NIGHT, on Saturday, October 26, is going to a fantastic night.  The staff will be back in full force to take on parents, their family and friends for the ultimate in bragging rights in obscure trivia knowledge.  Our current champions only have a few more weeks of glory before we crown the next victors.  The game is on and you're definitely going to want to be a part of this.  Order your tickets now.  Please remember we only have 2 major fundraisers planned this year, so your participation and support of these nights is essential and greatly appreciated.

Thanksgiving is coming soon, and is always a good time to reflect on the many blessings of our lives--I guess from that standpoint, perhaps every day should be Thanksgiving Day!  I am grateful to be a part of this wonderful school community.  I hope that you all will have the chance to spend time with your loved ones and the people in your life that bring you joy.  On behalf of the staff at SJB, Happy Thanksgiving to you all.

God Bless,

Mr. Bittante
Thursday, October 3 was the very first Multicultural Day at SJB, and we would like to acknowledge everyone who came together to help us celebrate the beauty and diversity in our community. The day included students and staff dressing up in cultural dress, celebrating mass in multiple languages, snacks and games in the MPX at lunch, and a multicultural assembly and talent show at the end of the day. We were incredibly impressed by the talent displayed at our assembly, ranging from dance to singing, to drumming from various cultures, concluding with a martial arts demonstration by Grand Master Lee's Taekwondo School. We would like to say a huge thank-you to all staff, students, and parent volunteers who worked hard to make this day happen.

Sincerely, Mrs. Gloanec
Every family is entitled to two tickets to Trivia Night as they were purchased at the time of registration. Please let us know if you are coming so we can send you your tickets. (Each Trivia Night guest requires a physical ticket)

Please join us on Thursday, November 7 at 10:30 am for our Remembrance Day Assembly to honour the brave men and women who bravely fought for the many freedoms we enjoy today, followed by a delicious luncheon.  Everyone is welcome to attend! Please RSVP at or call 604-855-0571. St. John Brebeuf is located at 2747 Townline Road, Abbotsford.

Starting this month, students from SJB will be spending a lunch period reading with primary students at St. James Elementary, next door. This is a weekly event, and an excellent way of serving our community and also of fostering healthy relationships with students at the elementary school. This opportunity counts for service hours. Please see Mr. Palmarin to get involved.

Hey Bear Fans!

Good luck to all teams as their seasons' progress through the month.  Please come cheer on our teams at home games coming up in October.  Congratulations to the Senior Girls volleyball team on their terrific performance at the Bears Fall Classic Tournament.  The girls finished second in the tournament, losing in a thrilling 3 set match against Credo Christian in the finals.
All fall schedules are now posted on the school website on the Athletic Calendar. Please continue to check it regularly, especially towards playoff time at the end of the month. The calendar will post game schedules only, as coaches should be giving out practice schedules to each athlete.

Thank you to the parents who have already volunteered their time driving to and from games. We really appreciate the support and dedication you give to ensure we have a successful athletic program.
Another reminder that the athletics department is selling our BEAR WEAR gear.  You can see it displayed in the front trophy case in the MPX.  The gear can be purchased from the PE office or an order form can be left at the front office.

Mr. Sweeney
SJB will be offering a Food Safe course for all interested students on Tuesday, November 19.

Food Safe is a food handling, sanitation and work safety course designed for food service establishment operators and front-line food service workers such as cooks, servers, bussers, dishwashers, and deli workers. The course covers important food safety and worker safety information. Students who successfully pass this course will earn their Food Safe Certificate, which is valid for 5 years.
The cost of this course is $65.00.  Cheques can be made to St. John Brebeuf High School and must be paid before a student is allowed to take the class.  This course is open to any SJB student regardless if they are taking Food Studies as their elective.

*Interested students must bring in a signed permission slip with their payment.

On Thursday, October 24th, SJB, St. James & St. Ann’s School, and St. Ann’s Family Group will be jointly hosting a very special screening of the movie Screenagers.

Screenagers is an award-winning film that probes into the vulnerable corners of family life and depicts messy struggles over social media, video games and academics. Screenagers reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.

The movie will be shown in the SJB gymnasium starting at 7:00 pm and a facilitated discussion will follow the movie. Light refreshments will be served and babysitting is available for children ages 5 and up.

All parents, grandparents and teenage students are invited and encouraged to attend.
Photo retake day is Tuesday, October 15 for those students who either missed picture day, or would like to have their photo retaken. Full uniform (including school sweater) is required.
Please come attend SJB’s PSG meeting! The group of parents (PSG) that decide how to spend the Government of B.C. issued funds for each student will meet at SJB in the MXP on Monday, October 28th at 1 pm.
We would love more parent input on how this money is spent. If you have questions feel free to contact me 604-856-8450.
Thank you,
Elaine Motion
