Greetings RDRP Newsletter
WOW.. what a greyt summer it has been at RDRP! We have had the privilege of loving so many beautiful pooches and making sure they are well taken care of. Such sweet faces and  joy each one of them brings to all who get the opportunity to interact with them.

Summertime is also HOT, wet and it can be buggy so one has to prepare accordingly for volunteer time. If you can survive the summer you have it made in the shade the rest of the year. Volunteering is a lot of work at times but something magical always happens when helping out the houndies!

"A BIG Thank ROOOOO to ALL our volunteers who kept our tummys full, our apartments clean and took us on nice walkies and gave us good luvin while our beloved Lonnie & Malonnie were on vacation. We wuv Lonnie & Malonnie and ALL our volunteers! Go TEAM GREYHOUND!!" ~ RDRP Greyhound Gang

Double Suspension Gallop

At full speed these amazing animals do something truly unique. Of all the breeds of dog out there only one runs as the Greyhound. The Double Suspension Gallop is the key to their speed.

At two points in their run, where they have been clocked at speeds of 49 mph and can reach 30 mph in just 6 steps, all four of their legs are off the ground. Only one other animal is faster, the Cheetah, who also use this efficient method of attaining unprecedented speed.

The greyhound is a true 40 mph couch potato.

Con-GREYT-ulations!!!

Benny GreyhoundGREYT news! KW Getso, Benny (formerly Blackie) found his forever home with Jamie and Ron Cobb of Parrish. A handsome 2 year old boy, he'll be enjoying retirement spending time with Lucy, the Cobbs' cute little doxie. Congratulations to the Cobbs and we look forward to having Jamie as a new RDRP volunteer.

More wonderful news! Walkabout McGee, a very handsome 4 year old white and fawn boy was adopted today by Sandra Gilchrist of Sarasota. McGee has been fostered by Sue and Jim Clark (our foster angels) since May after injuring himself and needing TLC. We know it was love at first sight when Sandra met this super friendly boy. Congratulations to McGee and Sandra from your RDRP family. McGee is going to love going to New College with Sandra and meeting all her students. Once again, we see how very important fostering is for our hounds and encourage you to step up to the challenge . We know the Clarks will be happy to give any potential foster parent a few pointers.

Cassie found her forever home! Casual Dream a/k/a Cassie, a very pretty 3 year old black girl was adopted by Mike and Carmen Riley of Lakewood Ranch. Cassie had been fostered by Pieter and Nichole Kemp since her spay in June. Cassie is the Kemp's second foster grey and they do an outstanding job with each foster. Thank you Kemps and Congratulations to Mike and Carmen and Cassie from all your RDRP family. We hope Cassie gets to meet all the other greys who live in LWR.

We are so happy to post this adoption. Pat C Intense, aka Patcy, went to her forever home today with Melissa and Jim Feichter of Sarasota. Patcy has been fostered since June with Terry Kandle who has gone way beyond to take good care of her. What normally would have been an easy post op recuperation had some problems and Terry has taken such good care of her to make sure she was totally healed before she could go to her forever home. This is why we need foster homes. Patcy is a petite beautiful brindle 4 year old girl. Jim and Melissa's two cats have met Patcy and play hide and seek with her. Congratulations to Jim and Melissa on your new grey from your RDRP family. Hope to see you at our monthly meet and greet in Landings.

The Koenig family from Nokomis adopted Chelsea, a very pretty 4 year old white and fawn girl. Chelsea won the hearts of all who met her with her super sweet disposition and adorable mannerisms... she is a special little lady. We know she'll gets lots of love and attention with this wonderful family with so much love to go around! Congratulations from all your RDRP family. Keep us posted with lots of pictures.

Volunteers are Greyt!

We at RDRP are very lucky to have the most wonderful volunteers.  Every single one contributes something to completing our mission of finding the best forever homes for our retired racing greyhounds.

This month we want to pay a tribute to an outstanding person who volunteers in so many ways.  Her name is Lori Marshall. I am going to combine the comments of many of those who work with her.

We first got to know Lori when we received her application to adopt another greyhound after the loss of her former one.  She adopted "Taco" (now Poppy) in March of 2015.  That was soon followed by her application to volunteer.  She quickly made a name for herself as the "dog whisperer"  and was sometimes the only one who could get the most frightened dogs to begin to relate to people.  She never loses patience with any of them and they relate amazingly well to her.  Lori spends quiet time just sitting on their kennel floor with them to gain their trust.  That was the case with one of our most frightened dogs Selena who Lori fostered, failed fostering and who now has blossomed with Lori's TLC.  She is now know as Lilly.

Lori is committed to helping  at the adoption center including socializing dogs, cleaning kennels, bathing dogs and removing ticks that they often come in with.  There is nothing that Lori would not do for the dogs and she accomplishes it with both grace and humor.  And as one volunteer put it - the dogs never know if Lori will show up with pink or orange hair!  But they do not care because they know that loving is on the way.

As if this is not enough she has amazing and creative computer skills.  Lori is responsible for the new RDRP website and newsletter.  The "Noseletter" she publishes each month is a tremendous hit.  We love her talking dogs and funny videos about greyhounds.   We cannot begin to say what gratitude we have have for this help and talent.  She is always camera ready to capture the "houndies" in the most adorable ways.  We should not be surprised to find out additional talents, unknown to us now, in the years to come.

The pups are very lucky to have Lori spend time with them.  The people who volunteer with her are lucky as well.  Lori is a treasure and RDRP is very greytful to have her as a part of our family and as a friend.

Please Foster us so we have a better chance at finding our furever homes quicker! Oh what a life. Can you imagine not knowing what happens next? Wondering if there is more? The life of a greyhound waiting for his or her forever home is often long, lonely & uncertain. People come and go… and the beautiful grey waits.  Contact Geri, call her cell (685-4509) or email her at idlerichh@aol.com

Some greyhounds are selected and adopted fairly quickly and some may wait for many many months or seasons at no fault of there own.

Please help us be comfy!

Us houndies sleep a lot.. really we do. They don’t call us couch potatoes for nothing!

RDRP is now registered with Kuranda. They have awesome beds and we really can use new beds for the hounds at our adoption center.

Won’t you consider donating a bed to help these special dogs?

Happy Yappy Birthday Grace!

Olivia & GraceAugust 26th
My sweet girl Grace, will have her 5th birthday on 8/26. When Grace, race name RJs Kerisue came to me in February 2015, She had a toe amputated after her 86th race. Her foot was to be wrapped and kept clean until it was healed.  We had a few setbacks and a few more surgeries, and for awhile, it felt like It was never going to end.  I was a foster with the hopes to adopt. Finally, July 13th , we had our final vet visit and she was ready to be a playful girl! Throughout this time, she bonded with my other 3 ,Olivia my first Grey, JJ, a jack Russell, and Harley, a toy fox terrier. Not to mention, I had fallen madly in love with her. She and Olivia went to work with me everyday and the two of them are inseparable. Needless to say  I failed at my foster, and she became a very welcome member of my happy family. Grace Marie Pontillo!  She loves to play frisbee, ball and any other fetch games. Now, looking back, I forget she had any of that, and I am so greytful to have her and see how she has blossomed into a beautiful, lovable girl. She and Olivia work with me everyday and greet my customers. Now, so many come in to the shop and say Hi Grace and Olivia!! They are wonderful ambassadors. I can't imagine my life without them!!

Liam celebrating his 5th birthday on Aug. 3rd wearing his king-for-a-day crown. He was rewarded for his patience with a doggie birthday cake topped by a #5 candle. His feline brother Bailey celebrated with him by wearing a birthday hat, but was a bit put out when he was told cake wasn't on his diet. Liam also spent part of his birthday with the wonderful children at the HSSC Kid's Camp where they wished him a happy birthday, too.
