YBAA Announces the Election of New Officers and Board Members for the Coming Year

David Benson, CPYB, President of Nashville Yacht Brokers was recently elected as YBAA President, leading the association’s board of directors. The board includes thirteen YBAA member brokers from throughout the U.S. and Canada.

David Benson has been in the yachting industry since 1985. He initially served as part of a yacht crew and then entered the new boat sales market. David became a founding partner of Nashville Yacht Brokers in 1991 and assumed ownership in 2001.  He has served on the YBAA board since 2011.

“The reason we joined YBAA initially was to learn what we didn’t know,” stated Benson. “As it turned out, we learned a lot. There is a wealth of information gained by simply rubbing elbows with other yacht sales professionals who care enough about their business to belong to a professional organization. By relying on YBAA’s accepted business practices, code of ethics and protocols, and, as a CPYB certified professional yacht broker, I have been able to elevate my professional capabilities and bring even more value to my clients. I look forward to leading YBAA in the coming year as we work to positively influence our members and our industry.”

2015 Recap - It Was a Very Good Year

By Hal Slater, YBAA Immediate Past President

While driving from Connecticut to Annapolis, Maryland early last month to attend the YBAA Annual Board Meeting, I had some time to reflect on the past year and what the YBAA Board, committees and staff had accomplished. I thought to myself , "wow”, we have accomplished a lot and have made many positive impacts within our association and our industry!
  • 2015 was the second consecutive year we finished with a respectable financial gain.
  • The Certification Advisory Council and the CPYB Development Committee are on schedule with developing a new CPYB exam and publication of the new updated Guide.
  •  The Education Committee successfully solidified a relationship with The Yacht Broker Institute (YBI) which provides a basic training program for individuals seeking to enter our profession. YBI will encourage their graduates to pursue the CPYB accreditation as soon as they qualify.
  • YBAA received the American Boating Congress Ambassador Award at the Capitol Hill event in May of 2015. YBAA Executive Director, Vin Petrella and I attended this three-day annual event.

A Field Guide to Fraud

By YBAA Affiliate Member and Attorney, J. Dirk Schwenk
Baylaw, LLC

Lawyers, car salesmen, and Congressmen get accused of lying all the time.  Teenagers and cheating spouses -- they do lie all the time even if they are otherwise decent people.  In fact, we all lie all the time; it is just that some lies are different.  “How are you doing?  Great!”  “How much do you want?  Just a splash.”  “Do you like this dress?  Yes.”
One of the interesting things about the law is trying to figure out what kinds of lies are sufficiently bad to require that they be actionable.  The lies above are not actionable, at least under normal circumstances -- they are just normal social lies that don’t carry any meaning.
