On any given day, you just don’t know what you might learn.  As representatives of YBAA, Executive Director Vin Petrella and I attended the American Boating Congress in Washington DC, May 9-11.  The entire event is orchestrated by the National Marine Manufactures Association (NMMA) and co-hosted by the YBAA, CPYB and many other organizations committed to watching out for the interests of the recreational marine industry.

NMMA Testifies On EPA’s 2017 Ethanol Mandates


Last week, NMMA’s Michael Lewan testified at a public hearing on the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed increase to the 2017 Renewable Volume Obligations under the Renewable Fuel Standard. He argued that the EPA should lower the proposal to ensure the boating public remains safe on the water and continues to enjoy access to approved fuel blends. In addition to testifying, NMMA will be submitting formal written comments to the agency in advance of its July 11 deadline.

Small Boat Sales Drive Brokerage Volume Lower

The volume of brokerage sales of smaller boats declined markedly in May, which reduced total sales for the month by 273 boats, or 8 percent, compared to the same month a year ago. According to YachtWorld member brokerages reporting in SoldBoats, 3,324 boats changed hands for a total price of $407.8 million.

Why You Should Consider Laying off 20% of your Salespeople Every Year

Before you bite my finger off based upon the title, just look to where it’s pointing. The biggest issue I see in the workplace by far is a lack of accountability. Similarly, the biggest issue I see in sales forces is letting salespeople stay on the payroll while doing close to zero, or in some cases, while even losing the company business. I’m not talking about non-production over a period of days, weeks, or even months, I’m talking years in many cases. This absolutely needs to be addressed if you are going to be a highly successful sales organization.
