Executive Chairman's Update

The 2017 Armed Forces and Veterans Champions Gathering brought together a wide spectrum of stakeholders from across Scotland who are committed to ensuring that the overall thrust of the Military Covenant is delivered across Scotland. Generously hosted by the Lord Provost of Glasgow this Informing Scotland event promoted: working in a collegiate way; the importance of effective communication and continuing to improve connectivity and development of professional relationships.

Armed Forces & Veterans Champion Gathering 2017

On Monday the 2nd October 2017 we once again had what is described as a very successful Armed Forces and Veterans Champions Gathering in the Glasgow City Chamber.  The turn out on the day saw a wide range of both Local Authority officials, NHS and other statutory bodies attending the event.

Initial feed back from the event has shown that a large number of those who attended felt that it had been an informative event and that they had gained great benefit from attending.

It was also very interesting to hear the In-Service perspective on service provision and the lay-down of services and the engagement of the Firm Base Commanders with the various champions.

Go the #ExtraMile

Poppyscotland has just launched it’s campaign ahead of the 2017 Scottish Poppy Appeal in which they are asking supporters to go the #ExtraMile.  While tin donations are absolutely vital, if Poppyscotland is to be able to provide the fullest range of welfare services that our Armed Forces community need and deserve, they are asking the public to go the Extra Mile in their fundraising.  As part of the campaign they will be featuring the inspirational stories of people who have already gone the #ExtraMile and encouraging supporters to do something different in support of this year’s Appeal.  For more information visit www.poppyscotland.org.uk/extra-mile.

Unforgotten Forces

STILL GAME STAR SINGS HIS SUPPORT FOR FELLOW VETERANS

Still Game star James Martin – best known for playing Eric in the much-loved BBC comedy – joined musicians and residents for a sing-song at the Erskine Glasgow Nursing Home.

The event, featuring musicians provided by Music in Hospitals & Care Scotland, was to help publicise the forthcoming launch of the Unforgotten Forces programme of support for older veterans and their families in Scotland, which has come about after a consortium led by Poppyscotland was awarded £4 million from the Aged Veterans Fund.

For millions of Scots, James is best known as one of the calamitous Clansman cohorts of Jack and Victor in the hilarious sitcom. But what many people don’t know is that in 1949, at the age of 17, James joined the Royal Navy. He served for seven years and recalls that period of his life with absolute pride: “I had a wonderful time in the Royal Navy and I can honestly say it was the best thing I ever did… I loved the camaraderie and, having left school at 14, it was wonderful to get an education.
