is a significant year in the history of Missionary TECH Team. What makes it special is TECH will be celebrating 50 years of ministry!

Our story begins in 1968. Do you remember that year? The Vietnam War, the Cold War, the Civil Rights movement. President Lyndon B. Johnson. Martin Luther King Jr. is fatally shot in Memphis. Riots break out in more than 100 cities nationwide. The Supreme Court rules 7-1 that burning a draft card is not an act of free speech protected by the First Amendment. Robert Kennedy is assassinated in Los Angeles. The Detroit Tigers win the World Series. The average income was $7,850 per year, gas was 34 cents a gallon, and a new car was $2,822.

Some of these historical events had a tremendous impact on our nation. Others, not so much. To some that’s ancient history.

One event that occurred in 1968 had an eternal impact on what God was doing in the hearts of two young men, Birne Wiley and Dave Carnahan, as they listened to His voice and formulated plans for what eventually would become Missionary TECH Team.

With the next six issues of the Intercessor, we will celebrate God’s faithfulness and highlight some of His accomplishments over our 50 year history. It’s fun to look back at old pictures and retell some of the better stories. As these men went through those days, they did not realize the significant story it would someday tell. They didn’t think about legacies. They were thankful for projects to work on and were excited to see God’s hand faithfully meet the needs often just in the nick of time. The days were full of serving clients the best they could with the resources they had while trusting God to provide staff and finances to keep TECH going. 50 years later, we realize how fast it has all gone by, and there are so many stories to tell.

Of course, you understand that there have been several difficult days along this ministry journey as well. Warren Wiersbe has written a great little book entitled, The Bumps Are What You Climb On. He starts the book,
"A little boy was leading his sister up a mountain path and the way was not too easy. “Why, this isn’t a path at all,” the little girl complained. “It’s all rocky and bumpy.” And her brother replied, “Sure, the bumps are what you climb on.”
That’s a remarkable piece of philosophy. What do you do with the bumps on the path of Life?

We don’t celebrate 50 years as though we have reached the pinnacle of our journey. It gives us an occasion to pause and to celebrate God, to reflect, and to offer the opportunity to build upon our solid foundation as we anticipate future service.

We are pretty excited about sharing with you how God has blessed us over the years. We quickly say that we have served in all 50 States, in over 150 countries and worked on over 10,000 projects. That takes a second to say. It took 50 years to accomplish. It is somewhat easy for us to count things like countries served, how many missionaries we have helped, and the number of projects completed. It would be similar to baseball because we like to keep those statistics.
The things we can’t measure are the things that really excite us! How a hospital in Ecuador was not only a place for temporary healing but for eternal healing. How an architect designed a camp bunkhouse and a summer camper gave their heart to the Savior by their bunk after the evening campfire. Or how a software program we helped develop to track Bible lessons resulted in a person in an unreached part of the world hearing the good news of Jesus and their eternal destination changed. The design of a simple prayer card for a prisoner, with a life sentence, who is now following Jesus and is reaching Muslims for God’s kingdom in prison. What about a safe and reliable vehicle for a missionary who drives thousands of miles to report to churches of the many folks he has led to Jesus the previous months. These are just a very few examples of real life events with real people that take place. These folks, like us, are the people Jesus hung on the cross for.

We may be a technical ministry, but this is all about reaching people for Christ! Someday our reward will be standing by the river of living water, sparkling like crystal, flowing from the throne of God and the Lamb, down the middle of the broad street of the city. We will be eating 12 kinds of fruit from the tree of life with people we will finally meet who we had a small part in introducing to our precious Savior.

We are excited to celebrate and unfold 50 years of His story through Missionary TECH Team.
