Sunday October 30, 2022

Join us for worship on Sunday at 10 AM!

Worship This Week:

Laity Sunday
Philippians 4:4-13

This month, the Power of One offering will benefit
communications and outreach efforts during the upcoming holidays.

This week, we'll hold our annual celebration of Laity Sunday. All of the elements of our worship service -- from the opening welcome to the words of benediction -- will be led by the incredible members of Wesley Church! Come to hear powerful testimonies, uplifting messages, and awe-inspiring music. We hope to see you in worship!

What's happening this weekend...

Trunk or Treat!

On Sunday October 30, join us for our annual Trunk or Treat celebration after worship (approximately 11:15 AM). Decorate your trunks, prepare some treats, and enjoy the costumes of the kiddos of Wesley! To register your child for trunk-or-treating, or to volunteer to decorate your car or donate treats, please sign up here. Questions? Contact Miss Deb, our Director of Christian Education.

Final Week for Penny Wars 2022

This Sunday (October 30) is your final chance to bring in your pennies (and other cash and coin, too) for Penny Wars 2022! We'll announce the winner on Sunday November 6, and celebrate with the pie-in-the-face on Sunday November 13. Proceeds from this year's Penny Wars will help fund relationship-building and faith-forming activities through our "Year of the Table" initiative.

Final Garden Pickups

The final produce pickup for the 2022 growing season will take place on Monday October 31. Please drop off your donations by 9 AM. Thank you for your faithful donations all throughout the growing season. We can't wait to share the final total of pounds donated!

What's new in this edition of the Weekly E-news...

Catching Up with Pastor Candy

This week, it was my joy to put on my red shirt and resume my Depot role as "Chief of Cheer!" Each fall, I join our volunteers at the Lehigh Valley Outreach Depot to decorate for the Christmas holidays. Sometimes the Depot clients even adopt one of my pre-decorated Christmas trees!

There are so many ways to get involved with the work of the Depot -- whether through driving, moving furniture, labeling, cleaning, working with clients, or shopping for items. Volunteers are especially needed on Saturdays. For more information, contact the church office.

Connect Sessions

Are you new to Wesley and eager to get involved in ministry? We hope you'll join us for a series of "Connect Sessions" on Sunday November 20, November 27, and December 4 at 11:15 AM in the church library. In this three-part series, you'll have the opportunity to learn more about our congregation, about the United Methodist tradition, and about the many ministries through which you can use your gifts. For those interested in joining the church, our "connect sessions" also serve as our new member class. For more information, or to sign up, please email Pastor Candy.

Advent Study

Deepen your faith this Advent with our 2022 Advent Study! This year, we'll be studying Amy-Jill Levine's Light of the World: A Beginner's Guide to Advent. Deborah Appler will lead this year's Advent study, which will take place on Sundays in Advent (November 27, December 4, 11, & 18) at 9:00 AM in the Chapel. To sign up, order a book, or get more information, please email Pastor Candy

Thanksgiving Dinner Donations

Do you want to help families in our area celebrate Thanksgiving? Consider making a donation to the Mammy's Angels Thanksgiving meal drive. We'll be collecting food items from October 30 through November 17. (Meal bags will be distributed on November 20). To find a list of requested items, or to make a donation, please use our online signup. For more information, please contact Debbie Ace

Christmas Decorations

Before long, it will be time to decorate for Christmas! Our church Christmas "decorating days" will take place on Thanksgiving weekend:
  • Friday November 25: 2 PM to 5 PM (bring decorations out from storage)
  • Saturday November 26: 11 AM to 3 PM (decorate the sanctuary and atrium -- lunch provided!)
To participate, please use our online signup. Your help will make such a difference this holiday season!

Depot News

In our recent newsletter, we wrote about our support for refugees, and this was a week where that was at the forefront. Two of our volunteers came in on Wednesday (a day we are not ordinarily open) so that representatives from Bethany Christian Services could choose furnishings for two families—one from Lebanon and one from Columbia—who are arriving next week. Thanks to the generosity of our doors, we were able to provide the needed basics plus some decorative items to add that homey feel.

Furniture items we are in need of at the moment are table and chair sets, dressers, and end tables.

What's coming up...

Seeking Names for All Saints Sunday

Our annual celebration of All Saints Sunday -- this year, on Sunday November 6 -- includes a time for us to lift up the names of those loved ones who have passed away during the last year. As we lift these names in worship, we light candles and ring bells to honor their memory. If you would like to include the name of a loved one on our remembrance list for All Saints Sunday, please contact Susan in the church office by Tuesday November 1

Church Movie Night

Join us in the sanctuary for a church movie night on Saturday November 5 at 6:30 PM. We'll be showing Disney's Coco -- a delightful feel-good movie for kids and adults alike! As we experience the movie, we'll also make some meaningful connections between that story and our own celebration of All Saints Day. We hope to see you there!

Halupki Take Out Dinner

Support the work of Mammy's Angels through their upcoming halupki dinner fundraiser! Each $15 dinner includes two halupkis, mashed potatotes, corn, salad, bread, and a dessert. Place an order by email or phone (215-804-7509). All orders must be placed by November 7. Pickup will take place on Saturday November 12 from 5 PM to 7 PM in the Wesley Fellowship Hall.

All funds raised will benefit the Thanksgiving and Christmas programs of Mammy's Angels. Thank you for your support!

Men's Fellowship Breakfast

The next Men's Fellowship Breakfast will take place on Saturday November 19. Breakfast will begin at 7:30 AM, and the meeting with begin at 8 AM. For more information on the men's ministry, please contact Rich Chambers

Stuffing Throwdown

The star of the Thanksgiving table isn't the turkey -- it's the stuffing! This year, we're celebrating all things "stuffing" by crowning Wesley's first Stuffing Throwdown Champion!

To enter, sign up using the link below. (If you want to help with set-up or clean-up, please use the same link.) Prepare a casserole dish of your signature stuffing and bring it to church on Sunday November 20. Our taste-testers (our whole church family!) will blind-taste the entries and vote for their favorite. The winner will receive a special prize -- and some serious bragging rights! But sign up soon... entries in this year's throwdown is limited to the first eight contestants who sign up! Sign up here, or contact the church office.

Meals for BES

This year, our church will once again be supporting the work of the Bethlehem Emergency Shelter (BES) -- and you can help make it happen! Once each month, we provide hot meals, monitor the shower schedule, and offer a loving presence to the guests of the shelter. We will be serving our first meal on Monday, November 21. We'll be at the shelter from 4 PM to 9 PM, but shorter shifts are available to fit your schedule. To get involved, please contact our coordinator Becky

Library News

As promised, here are a couple of suggestions for “non-religious” novels on our shelves. (Although spiritual lessons may be gleaned even in secular works.):

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood is a dystopian tale set in New England which has overthrown the U.S. government is and is now a totalitarian state known as The Republic of Gilead. It centers on Offred, a young woman who has been assigned to be the handmaiden of a wealthy patron. She and her fellow handmaids are valued only for their ability to reproduce. This is a chilling story that resonates with the culture of today. We also have the sequel, The Testaments, available.

In a different vein, we have two books by Kristin Hannah. The first is The Nightingale, an exciting WWII story of a rescuer of Allied soldiers who have been trapped behind enemy lines in France. The second is The Great Alone, in which a troubled family seeks a new start in the wilderness of Alaska only to find that survival in the harsh environment is easier to deal with than negotiating the erratic behavior of the people closest to them.

Northampton County is currently in the "medium risk" category.
CDC guidelines include:
