Mr Harrison's blog

Although this is the first newsletter of 2017, we have been well under way for some time and Weston Green is again resounding to the rhythm of each school day and week. We have already had trips out, the Open House in Key Stage 2, matches against other schools and some wonderful special assemblies - all this of course on top of the impressive work going on in each class; the number of Headteacher’s Awards on the corridor wall is indicative of both the quality and quantity of work already achieved this term.

A trip to the theatre for Kindy
On Friday 13th January , Kindergarten had their very first school trip to see ‘The Bear’ at the Rose Theatre in Kingston. We had read the book by Raymond Briggs and the children were excited to finally watch the production which was about a giant polar bear who goes to live with a little girl in her house.
Reception are roaring to go!
The Reception classes were eager to get back to their learning last week and happily greeted their friends and teachers. Our spring theme of Dinosaurs is always one of the most popular topics and this year is no exception! Children have started to explore herbivores and carnivores and written about the types of food dinosaurs might enjoy.
Year 2 are shaping up
Year 2 have become shape specialists this week. Activities have included sorting shapes into a Venn diagram according to their properties, playing ‘build it’ when they instructed a partner to build a structure, using only the properties of the shapes to explain which shapes to use and making their own 3D shapes from nets, identifying and labelling the 2D shape faces on their 3D shape.  As always, Year 2 shaped up brilliantly!
Year 4 trip to science museum
Last week, 4B went to the London Science Museum. It was so incredible it blew our minds! Our topic is ‘Weird and wonderful science!’ – and we certainly saw some! Fin held fire on his hand, Sam had his face analysed by a computer (which told him he was an eighteen-year old girl, but that’s not the point), and countless others were spun round so fast on a podium that we had a lot of very dizzy children.
School council update
Last term the School Council came up with the great idea of having a buddy/friendship stop in the playground. It is situated next to a bench near the main building. Children can choose to sit on the bench if they are feeling lonely and if they need someone to play with. Other children will then see them, have a quick chat and find a suitable playmate or game for them to participate in. It has been a great success so far and many new friendships have been made as a result of it.

Roald Dahl project launch
Mr Harrison launched the theme for this year’s projects in assembly at the beginning of term – the children will choose one aspect of the life or work of Roald Dahl on which to focus their individual research project.
  Open House in KS2
Thank you very much to those parents who came and joined us for the Key Stage 2 Open House.  The morning gave our visitors the opportunity to experience life at the upper end of the school through attending a Key Stage 2 assembly, enjoying a walk around the new classrooms and sharing in the fantastic learning that takes place continually. The Key Stage 2 children loved seeing their parents in their lessons and although this was an event in its own entity, the experience is what can be found habitually at the school from day to day.
