Mr Harrison's blog

We have had two utterly fabulous weeks focusing firstly upon ‘Science’ and then upon our ‘Project ‘16’. The children have again responded superbly to the challenge set before them and epitomised that ‘learning with joyful enthusiasm’ which genuinely characterises the daily life of the school; I am sure that those of you who attended will have marveled at the children’s imagination, rigour and depth of knowledge.

Daisy, Daisy ...

This week Kindergarten have been getting stuck into maths. The children used their knowledge of numbers to make daisy chains, counting out the flowers and petals. Some children even counted to 30!

Reception’s Independent Writing
Reception have been practising their independent writing skills, completing a range of pieces of work so far this term. View some examples of their work.
Royal readers in Year 1
KS1 have started an exciting new initiative this term to help encourage children to develop their expression when reading aloud to an audience.

In every KS1 class, two children a week are being asked to go and read to the year group below them and are crowned the ‘Royal Readers’ of the week.
Table tennis
On a lovely sunny Wednesday morning, the children of Key Stage 2 were fortunate to have a table tennis workshop. After a brief assembly on the basics of the game, demonstrating the difference between forehand and back hand, two ‘volunteers’ were selected; step forward Mr Harrison and Mr Morgan. A brief match took place, at the end of which Mr Morgan was crowned champion.
Victorian Day
As part of their history study of the Victorians, Year 5 were transported to a bygone era last Tuesday when their classroom was transformed into a Victorian school room. Interactive technology gave way to a blackboard which had as its centre piece, a portrait of a stern looking Queen Victoria.
Travel plan
The travel plan is a structured strategy with objectives and targets detailing how the school manages and promotes sustainable travel to school. The initiatives were formalised as a result of the planning permission granted in January but will be adopted going forward. The objective is to reduce the number of car journeys to WGS.
  Project 16
The school community enjoyed a wonderful morning looking at the children’s history projects last week. This was the culmination of several months of independent research by many of the pupils who, this year, were given a choice of three subjects: The Queen (celebrating her 90th birthday); Shakespeare (the 400th anniversary of his death) or the Battle of Hastings (950 years ago).
