  Mr Harrison's blog

In the last edition, I wrote abut exams and assessment. It is a mark of the richness of a typical Weston Green week that I am now full of thoughts about other aspects of school life here: last week we had our annual ‘Anti-Bullying’ and ‘Interfaith’ weeks as well as our Teatime Concert. It was, therefore, a most thoughtful, reflective and creative week.

The prayers and thoughts which now adorn the prayer tree are indicative of the children’s excellent use of their time in the Quiet Room.

Reception celebrate Diwali

Reception had great fun celebrating Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Light.  We watched a special program on Diwali and heard the story of Rama and Sita.  The children re-enacted the story using shadow puppets they had made.  They also made colourful divas out of model magic and sparklers out of streamers.  The children had fun performing a traditional Hindu stick dance and incorporated some impressive Bollywood moves.

A mummifying experience for Year 3

On a damp and dreary Monday morning, Year 3 visited Haselmere museum as part of their Ancient Egyptian topic. The children were greeted by Kay, the museum educational officer, and a buzz of excitement was soon evident. The children were given the opportunity to ‘mummify’ the museum mummy called ‘Suty’, meaning they had to empty his body of all his vital organs.

Fire, Fire!

History lessons in Year 2 have been focusing on the topic of the Great Fire of London. Recently the children had the chance to participate in a workshop by The Freshwater Company.  They enjoyed acting out the story of the fire which gave them all the chance to show off their knowledge and their acting and dancing skills!  From re-enacting life in Pudding Lane, to meeting Samuel Pepys, the children had great fun being historians for the afternoon.

Printing workshop

Miss Joanna Moore from Epsom College kindly visited the art scholars to deliver a fantastic monoprinting workshop in the Art Room recently. The children were extremely excited about spending the morning learning how to print and have made some amazing work in the process. Using safety glass as the flat, smooth surface to apply the printing inks, the pupils tested their strength and resilience in rolling out sticky ink colours as flat as possible to cover the glass evenly before beginning to design their underwater scene.

Teatime concert

We were treated to a delightful array of music at the teatime concert last Thursday. The children performed on their violins, guitars and drums and played some fun pieces too on the piano. The vocalists sang with confidence and sensitivity. The instrumental teachers had put forward children who had been working hard on their pieces and that were ready to perform in front of a welcoming audience. We certainly experienced some wonderful and talented performances. Well done to all the performers and a thank you to Mr Kennedy (Guitar & Drum teacher), Mrs Hartley (Violin & Voice) and Mrs Clohesy (Piano) for your prepartions.

  Anti-bullying and interfaith week

During Anti-Bullying and Interfaith Weeks, which coincided this year, we took the theme of ‘Looking after each other’ as we addressed issues relating to bullying, friendship and valuing the variety of faiths represented within the school .  We welcomed Ian Whitley and Sue Ross from All Saints Church who led an interfaith assembly for KS1 and KS2, as well as interactive sessions with each year group exploring our theme.
