Mr Harrison's blog

Already two weeks have gone in the new school year! It has been wonderful to start the year together in such a positive way with the ‘Meet the Teacher’ evening and I sincerely hope this will help form the bedrock of the year, underpinning the day-to-day work in the classroom (and beyond) with those strong parent-teacher relationships which are too valuable to even try and measure.

Ready for Reception
Reception children have settled into their new classes extremely well over the past couple of weeks. They have been returning each morning with huge enthusiasm and big smiles on their faces. We have welcomed a number of children in our classes, new to Weston Green, who are proving to be a welcome addition to our school.
Starting school
This week has been an extremely exciting one for many of Weston Green’s smallest pupils. It was their first full week in school, first time wearing the school uniform, first time eating lunch in the hall and first time playing on the astro - the list of firsts is endless! They have enjoyed Music and French lessons with Mrs. Pinhey, games with Mr. Dowson and made fruit kebabs during cookery afternoon. The children have engaged in outdoor learning in all areas and even enjoyed picking some of the fresh produce. They have all settled well and we are looking forward to the forthcoming year.
Year 1 are excited to be back!

After a wonderful summer, the warm days, the family fun and the trips abroad - it’s time to welcome KS1 back. An empty and silent school is no competition for a vibrant, buzzy and energised environment and that atmosphere returned as soon as the school gates opened!

Science in action in the new science room

The new science lab was in full use this week for year 5 and year 6 students. We even had a cheeky squirrel pop his head through the doors to see what all the excitement was about, though he quickly realised science wasn’t for him.

The year 5s have been getting to grips with investigating how to separate different mixtures.

New building
What a delight it is to see the new building completed and in use! It is there as a result of the ongoing commitment by our parent company Bellevue to invest in the school and careful internal planning and sheer hard work. Whilst it is not always a good thing to pick out one particular person in celebrating an achievement, in this particular case it would be remiss of me not to highlight the enormous contribution of Mrs Susan Withers, the Business Manager, who has been truly amazing in her relentless determination to ensure deadlines are met.

Video: Year 4 learn about pentatonic scales
In Music this week, Year 4 enjoyed learning about pentatonic scales. They each chose five notes to play on the xylophones and glockenspiels, then practiced these notes as part of an eight-note improvisation.
By the end of the lesson, Year 4 were performing their improvisations to a backing track. Click here to watch our short video.
  Learning with Sir Linkalot
KS1 and KS2 pupils were challenged this week to make links between facts in order to ‘make the forgettable unforgettable’. The inspiration for this came from Andy Salmon, aka Sir Linkalot, who led an assembly followed by workshop sessions for all pupils from Year 1 – Year 6.
