  Mr Harrison's blog

Do you think in words, pictures or music? Without wishing to worry you about the sanity of the Headmaster let me admit to you that I have constant songs in my mind and I often sing my way through a day, either internally or out loud (much to the huge annoyance of my wife when at home). Why, I cannot tell .. but I do. I would even venture to say others do the same.

What makes Reception special
In recent PSHE lessons the pupils in Reception have been thinking about the qualities which make them special. They thought about words to describe these special qualities - such as kind, hard working, polite, and then made collages. Click here to see a short video.

World book day
Reception have gone book crazy this week! Each child has brought in their favourite book from home to commemorate World Book Day; an annual day in the UK and Ireland that celebrates the pleasures of books and reading. It has provided a wonderful opportunity for the children to practise speaking and listening skills in small groups as well as encouraging them to question one another about their choices.
A knight visits Year 1
Year 1 had an interesting visitor on Wednesday - a knight! He had come in to tell the children all about life in a medieval castle. Pupils found out who might have lived there, what their jobs may have been, who may have visited the castle and what all the different parts of a castle were called. Through an exciting drama workshop, the children acquired great insight into the workings of a castle which helped to consolidate the learning from recent topic lessons. Year 1 will continue to look at British castles over the rest of the term and imagine what it may have been like for them to live in such a grand home. Teachers are asking them to think about the good and the bad points to castle life and how this may have changed over time.
KS2 get creative in lead up to World Book Day
Budding authors in KS2 were treated to a masterclass in creative writing last week, as a very special author came in to give some advice and top-tips.  Gwyneth Rees (whose other job is being Lottie and Eliza Oechies’ mother!)  spent a morning with the children giving them ideas on how to start stories and crucially, how to move them along when they get stuck for ideas.  With over 22 published books to her name she was a perfect choice for the morning and the children benefitted from the sharing of her own experiences.  Thank you Mrs Oechies for a very creative and insightful morning.
Well done year 6!
The Year 6 cohort has once again made Weston Green School incredibly proud with all children gaining places at their preferred schools with many faced with the enviable task of having to choose from a selection.

The 11+ process is not an easy one but this year’s was particularly tough as many schools commented on how over-subscribed they had been.

Year 4 on the lookout

On Tuesday Year 4 went to the Lookout Discovery Centre for our Science trip. We learnt so much about different forces in our science show and had lots of fun trying to push cars off the table or send Henry flying backwards on his go-kart!

  KS2 reach for the Sky
This week KS2 were thrilled to spend a whole afternoon at Sky Studios. They were there to participate in Game Changers, where they were both audience, interviewers (asking some great questions of the guest T20 cricketer Sam Billings) and game players (watch the show on Saturday 12th March).

What may have surprised them was the number of times that things had to be done again before the Sky team were happy with the results. It just goes to show that in all things, practice makes perfect.
