Still Standing - celebrating life
Dear collector and art lover
2020 has been a remarkable year. Although the pandemic has hit us all differently, one common impact of the virus is that it has changed our lives.
It has got me thinking about life and death.
Each person has a different different way of dealing with a catastrophe, a unique way of living their lives. Paul du Toit threw everything he had at life.
His art has a particular resonance in these times. I think of works like: Walk Unafraid; Into Tomorrow; Still Moving; Regroup; When the Sun Comes Up; Some Days are Better than Others, and Losing Yourself on a Desolate Beach.
The titles alone give a clear indication of Paul’s desire to celebrate survival.
I have selected one work (in two mediums) that I would like to offer collectors: it is a bronze figure and an aluminium figure entitled Still Standing.
Not only is Still Standing a celebration of life, it is also a two fingered salute to those forces that attempt to grind us down.
Paul was having none of that. It is, I suspect, a common sentiment among his followers and collectors.
Lorette du Toit
PS. The relief bronze titled The Band consists of 5 Still Standing figures as pictured below. There are 4 left on offer in this edition of 8.
