Grantee Spotlight:
HUGE Victories for low-income families

Our largest grantee, Columbia Legal Services (CLS), is always hard at work for low-income families and it's really paying off.
Last week, the Seattle City Council approved an ordinance to protect renters from discrimination based on their source of income and to require landlords to accept applicants in the order in which they applied. CLS worked closely with councilmembers and community groups to bring about this huge win for working families.

In July, CLS made multiple headlines. The most high profile case was a $1 million settlement in favor of Yakima farm workers seeking to improve working conditions. Then, in a follow up to a CLS case argued before the State Supreme Court last year, a federal judge ordered Sakuma Brothers Farm to pay $250,000 in legal fees. In another judgement in favor of CLS, a Yakima County court judge found two Yakima hospitals did not adequately screen low-income patients for eligibility of charity care. Finally, thanks to CLS's unending advocacy, the state agreed to notify 900 Medicaid patients with Hepatitis C of a rule change allowing them access to a costly but effective cure.

Why I support the Endowment for Equal Justice

I believe access to justice is a basic civil right, and as a legal professional, I have a responsibility to support it. Civil legal issues such as healthcare, immigration and consumer protection are complex, challenging, and important to the lives of all citizens. I support the Endowment for Equal Justice to ensure legal aid will always be available for all people in the state of Washington.

Did someone say free CLE?!

That's right, folks. LFW offers a free one-hour CLE for .5 ethics and .5 general credits. Our presentation, "Washington's Civil Justice Crisis & the Need for Pro Bono Lawyers," provides an overview of the 2015 Civil Legal Needs Study Update, Washington's civil legal aid network, and the role of pro bono in achieving access to justice for all.
This is a great way to learn more about the civil legal needs of low-income Washingtonians and find out how to help advance equal justice. We would love to present at your firm or organization, please contact Jay Doran for more details.
