Grantee Spotlight:
$5.8 Million Awarded in Special Grants!

Thanks to a settlement from Bank of America and residual funds from Judd v. AT&T, LFW made limited special grants (totaling $5.8M) in the areas of foreclosure prevention, community redevelopment, and prison and re-entry work.
The application process was an exciting one; 39 letters of inquiry were submitted by 34 organizations across Washington. Proposals ranged from systemic advocacy to reduce mass incarceration to building the capacity of micro-enterprises in low-income immigrant and refugee communities.

After careful consideration of the grant criteria and priorities, the Foundation Board of Trustees awarded 17 grants across the three funding areas. Projects are slated to begin in January 2017 and a full list of funded project descriptions is available on our blog. Congrats to our Special Grant recipients!

Donor Spotlight

"I choose to give to the Campaign for Equal Justice because, especially in eastern Washington, the need for civil legal services is vast, and we have fewer attorneys to volunteer pro bono hours and fewer monetary resources to help clients access justice. A little bit goes a long way, and I like that I’m helping lift up members of my own community."
-- Ellen S. Jackson, Stokes Lawrence Velikanje Moore & Shore, Yakima, WA

Save the date:  Legal Aid Lobby Day

Thursday, February 16, 2017

On February 16, 2017, join the Equal Justice Coalition (EJC) in Olympia to advocate for state funding for civil legal aid. The EJC is asking the Legislature to make a substantial increase in legal aid funding, and to be successful we need your voice.

Help us reach Minimum Access! The national standard for adequate civil legal aid service is 1 legal aid attorney for 5,000 low-income people. Sadly, Washington state has roughly 1 legal aid attorney for every 11,000 low-income people.
Join us in Olympia and we'll provide:
  • Training on how to talk to your elected officials to be an effective advocate
  • Meetings with your lawmakers -- we'll set the meetings and provide talking points you can use to express the need for increased legal aid funding
  • Guests speakers to deliver encouragement
  • Transportation, food, and a chance to be a part of a strong and growing movement for equal justice!
In the coming months, look for more details and a registration page on our website. In the meantime, if you have questions, feel free to contact Jay Doran

Donor Survey!

Just when you thought polling season was over...
