Things to know
Looks like stale potato chips aren't the only thing vending machines are giving out these days. Snapchat’s guerilla marketing campaign utilizes pop-up vending machines, dubbed “Snapbots,” to sell its much-anticipated “Spectacles” to excited customers. The cute Snapbots have made appearances in Venice and Loma Vista, California, and, according to their site, a new location will be revealed in less than 24 hours. So if you want a pair, you’re either going to have to hike out to one of these sites or take to eBay (where they’re being sold for up to $900 a pop). Get more details on how you can land a pair of Spectacles here.
Even Beyoncé would be proud of this formation. The Duchess of Cornwall (aka Prince William & Harry’s stepmom) stepped out with an all-female security team during her three-day visit at the United Arab Emirates. Wearing traditional hijab and abayas, the women are members of the UAE presidential guard and are trained in the martial arts. Three of the four women have reportedly even recently climbed Mount Everest. Talk about girl power. See the photo of Camilla surrounded by her girl boss security detail here.
This event may have blown your weekend plans out of the water. Several celebrities including Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba, Matthew McConaughey, Camila Alves, Christina Aguilera, Channing Tatum, and Jenna Dewan Tatum all made it out to the Baby2Baby Gala in Los Angeles to honor Jennifer Garner and raise money for a great cause. The actress was being honored at the event for the work she’s done in support of children in need around the world. The gala raised $3 million for the charity that provides necessities to low-income youth and was kicked off with a humorous speech by one of our favorite celeb couples, Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard. See photos of the event and breathtaking gowns here.
It’s time to break out the Manolos. Sex and the City may be getting its own spin-off series, starring Kim Cattrall in her iconic role as Samantha Jones. Speculation of a spinoff first began on the The Wendy Williams Show, where Wendy discussed Kim being in talks with HBO to star in her own show. Kim then took to Twitter to address the rumor saying, “I’m so unbelievably flattered & moved. Can’t WAIT 2 get back 2 the serious business of making u all laugh! Fingers x’d.” Excuse us while we break out our tutu skirt. Get the details here.
Here comes baby no. 2! Pink and Carey Hart are expecting their second bundle of joy. The singer took to Instagram to announce the news, captioning a picture of her daughter Willow hugging her baby bump with, “Surprise!” The daughter and mother duo are wearing matching outfits while posing in an Insta-worthy background. The singer first gave birth to Willow in 2011 after getting married in 2006. Congrats to the happy couple! See the announcement picture here.
Having quietly amassed a following of over 11 million readers in the past 6 years, PureWow has become one of the premier women’s lifestyle websites for unique daily content. At the helm is Mary Kate McGrath, who joined the team in 2013 after a traditional career path in print media spanning from Real Simple to InStyle. As PureWow’s Editor in Chief (a title that is all-encapsulating in the ever-evolving world of digital media), Mary Kate has overseen audience growth that has ballooned tenfold and a staff that has tripled in size since she arrived. She's involved in all facets of the business, doubling as both head of content as well as creative director, but also often involved in audience development strategies, product discussions, or even as PureWow’s spokesperson on broadcast TV, all while standing as the real-life representative of the PureWow brand— a fun and interesting woman (who just happens to have kids). We know you’re wondering— what does this lady boss do before heading to PureWow HQ? Scroll down to get a glance at her morning routine.
6:30 A.M. I wish I was a morning person but I’m really not. It’s hard not to jump back on email after my boys, Jackson (age 5), and Charlie (age 2), are asleep, and absorbing all that blue light makes me stay up far beyond virtuous hours. Thankfully, my wonderful husband gets up with the boys half the time and I’m able to sleep in a tad. When I do rise with the rugrats, it’s at 6:30 A.M. They immediately start asking to watch a show, which we try to circumvent most days, but occasionally nothing beats a good dose of pre-dawn Daniel Tiger to wake up (and allows for some surreptitious email-checking).
7 A.M. By the time 7am rolls around, the boys’ tummies are audibly rumbling. That means a valiant effort at a nutritious breakfast — from eggs, to apples, to greenery— which unfortunately is all-too-frequently followed by the less than valiant post-breakfast lollipop.
7:45 A.M. Next, it’s back upstairs where I’ll pop on a sheet mask (delighting Charlie to no end) and ensure everyone’s dressed for the day: Charlie and Jackson in Rockets of Awesome and myself in heels and jeans, or, depending on how fancy whoever I’m meeting with is, a dress borrowed from the fabulous Amarium.
8:30 A.M. It’s a half an hour train ride into the city, and though I’d like to say I spend it reading one of those books I’ve been meaning to get to (Swing Time and The Mothers are at the top) or listening to the latest of HerMoney, that time usually gets spent replying to emails and preparing for the day. I’m usually without a lick of makeup thus far, and so, to the amusement of my fellow commuters, I’ll make best efforts with some of Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer and a quick swipe of Revlon to the lips.
9:00 A.M. Coffee on the way in, always. Usually that means a flat white (thank you Australia), and one for my assistant or whoever else I’m meeting with first. We’re in the midst of an immense growth spurt right now so that means meetings of all kinds, from job candidates, to clients, to potential partnerships. When the caffeine wears off, gummies and KitKats for supplemental energy.
10:00 A.M. Culture is king at PureWow and making sure everyone is 100% is priority number one for me, whether through a supportive squeeze, rapid-fire Slack exchange, or an open and honest one-on-one meeting. I already follow my team on every form of social media so I know what’s going on in their lives to a creepy level. It’s great.
11:15 A.M. On days that I’ve found the time to squeeze in a 7 A.M. tennis session, I’m usually starving before noon. I’m either chatting with our Director of Brand Partnerships, Alexx, or my assistant Anthea again about where to order from. The biggest secret is that I’m often a double luncher (especially on those tennis days), so if I go out to meet with a publicist or friend I try to stay healthy with something light. The current favorite spot is L’Amico, both for proximity and for the salmon salad. Upon return, it’s more gummies and full steam ahead into the afternoon (Diet Coke to come).
